Michels places fifth in triple jump for U-Mary at recent meet

Lashae Michel recently competed for the University of Mary track and field team at the Cobber Invitational. The meet was held at Concordia College, Feb. 9.

Six teams competed in the meet, including the University of Mary, Jamestown College, College of St. Benedict, Concordia College, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, North Dakota State School of Science and the College of St. Benedict.

The University of Mary enjoyed a very successful meet. Both the men's and women's teams took first with both of Jamestowns' teams coming in second. The men's team took first with 185 points, narrowly defeating Jamestown, who finished with 181 points. The U-Mary women's team took first with 226.5 points. Jamestown finished a distant second with 173 points.

Head track and field coach Mike Thorson was pleased with his team's performances.

"It was a good meet for us, for both the men's and women's teams," said Thorson. "It's always nice to compete well and win a meet."

Still, Coach Thorson would like to see more consistency from his teams.

"As a team, our performances are really up and down. For us to be successful we need everybody to perform more consistently," he said.

Michels competed in the triple jump. She finished with a jump of 34 feet 5 1/2 inches, placing her in fifth overall.

Michels, a freshman at the University of Mary, graduated from Havre High School in 2001.
