HINGHAM Erwin G. "Swede" Carlson, 81, owner of Carlson's Machine Works in Hingham, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at his residence of natural causes.
The funeral service is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hingham with Pastor Tim Hauge officiating. Burial will follow at the
Joplin Cemetery. After the committal service a luncheon will be served at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hingham.
Erwin was born Sept. 4, 1920, to Algot and Anna Carlson at Joplin. He was educated in Joplin and graduated from Joplin High School.
Erwin joined U.S. Army in 1940. He served during World War II in the South Pacific with the 2075th Trucking Company and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he worked in road and dam construction for several years. He acquired ownership in Rice Motors of Hingham in 1953 and changed the name to Carlson Machine Works.
On June 20, 1948, Erwin married Viola Estella Pimley. To this union four sons were born.
Swede enjoyed dancing, working and building things with metal. He also enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and driving the grain truck in the summer for Dennis Kannberg. One special lady friend that has been with him for the past five years is Rose Peters.
Swede was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Elks Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Algot and Anna Carlson; brothers, Axel, Melvin, and Eric Carlson.
Survivors include his sister Ruth; sons Dwight (Sandy) Carlson of Kelso, Wash., Kelly (Julia) Carlson of Littleton, Colo., Stuart (Linda) Carlson of Troy, Loren (Rhonda) Carlson of Havre; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Donations in Swede's honor may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home of Havre.
