While the Havre High boys basketball team was fighting to stay alive in the Central A Boys Basketball Tournament in Great Falls, the volleyball players had something of their own to prove Saturday in their final home games of the season.
First off for the Ponies were the Browning Indians, a team that has yet to win a game this season. But the Indians have proven themselves in tournament play, nearly defeating some of the best teams in the state.
Havre came out fighting and controlled the game from the start en route to 15-7, 15-3, 15-4 wins.
Amy Ranes led the Ponies in kills with eight, followed by Sara Suek and Julie Wagner each with six. Ranes also added two blocks, while Suek had six digs and three aces.
No rest for the weary as the Indians played the next game of the triangular meet against Lewistown. Lewistown cruised to easy 15-2, 15-5, 15-1 victories.
The Eagles tallied 12 aces in the game, led by five from Melissa Mitchell and three from Megan Richter.
The top-ranked Lewistown team got the call next against a Ponies team that was out for revenge.
With tough play back and forth, and nearly even stats, the Ponies pulled out a win. The Ponies took the first game 15-11, before falling in the second 16-14. Havre came back in the third with a 16-14 victory and won the last game 15-9.
Havre (12-8 overall, 7-2 conference) topped Lewistown (10-9 overall, 7-3 conference) by one with 56 total kills, had nine more blocks than the Eagles, one fewer assist, six more digs, and two more aces.
Ranes totaled 20 kills with Suek close behind with 15. Jayla and Jeanna McPherson combined for 7.5 blocks, with Jayla McPherson setting up 46 assists.
Suek led with 17 digs, followed by 14 from Wagner. Wagner also led with four aces.
Dani Buehler topped Lewistown with 24 kills, with Alicia Mannin following with 16. Buehler added three blocks. Shaylynn Conroy totaled an impressive 27 digs with Mannin adding 14. Melissa Mitchell had three aces in the losing effort.
Six Havre seniors played in their last home games Saturday Julie Wagner, Katie Miller, Laura Hedstrom, Jeri Matter, Amy Ranes, and Jayla McPherson.
The regular season wraps up for Havre with Park on Friday and then the Windy City Classic Saturday.
