CHINOOK Lawrence Detlef (L.D.) Buhmann, 102, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, after a long and productive life.
Services were held today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeffrey Spencer officiating. Burial was to follow at the Kuper Memorial Cemetery.
Lawrence was born March 16, 1899, at Wasco, Ore., to Arnold and Anna Buhmann. He was raised and educated there and graduated from Wasco High School. The family moved to Hermiston, Ore., in 1919, where he began his lifelong vocation of beekeeping.
In 1930, he married Ruth Sprague Buhmann and the family moved to Montana. They settled on the Missouri River south of Glasgow where they continued producing honey. Following the completion of the Fort Peck Dam in 1937, their property was covered by reservoir water that forced another relocation. They settled in Zurich and continued as beekeepers in the Milk River Valley until retirement in 1980. In 1983, they moved to a home they bought west of Chinook.
Lawrence had many interests during his lifetime. He hunted big game over the Western United States, Canada and Alaska.
He was a talented gunsmith. He made many rifles over the years that he shared with family and friends. Lawrence enjoyed traveling, visiting with friends and family, gardening, and riding his 4-wheeler.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his daugher, Ilene Mord in 2000, his parents, two brothers and two sister.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Buhmann of Chinook; daughter, Nancy Norberg of Ogden, Utah; sons, Robert Buhmann of Zurich and Ivan Gene Buhmann of Cascade; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Red Cross.
