Jonathan Windy Boy, chairman of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council, has resigned from the council, citing increasing commitments because of his campaign for House District 92.
Windy Boy, who is a member of the Chippewa Cree tribal council, said today he thinks it would be unfair to the Tribal Leaders Council if he tried to lead it while campaigning, and while representing House District 92 if he is elected this fall.
"It would be unfair to the organization if I didn't give my total commitment to it," Windy Boy said.
Windy Boy was unanimously selected chair of the council in 2000, after he was selected by his brother, Chippewa Cree Tribal Chairman Alvin Windy Boy, to represent the tribe on the council. The Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council represents the interests of 10 tribes in the two states on state and federal issues.
"The position of the chairman of the Tribal Leaders Council, the individual who is in that position not only has to look out for their local tribe's needs, but be fair for all other member tribes," Jonathan Windy Boy said.
Alvin Windy Boy now will represent the Chippewa Cree Tribe on the Tribal Leaders Council or appoint someone to do so.
The Tribal Leaders Council selected Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council President Geri Small as its new chair.
Jonathan Windy Boy said he has no plans to give up his seat on the Chippewa Cree tribal council if elected to the state House.
