The Hill County Democratic Central Committee is joining an effort to get Montana to buy hydroelectric plants.
Frank Hayes said Hill County Democrats will be collecting signatures to place the dam initiative on the ballot in November. About 21,000 signatures statewide will be needed by July 17 to get the initiative on the ballot. The Hill County Democrats will start their signature drive next week, Hayes said.
Proponents of the initiative say state ownership of hydroelectric plants would create savings for Montana electricity customers.
If the initiative passes, the state would have to create a five-member commission to investigate the feasibility of buying the plants.
