When she was 3, they moved to a ranch in the Clear Creek area of the Bear Paw Mountains. Mildred attended the Diamond Bar School, which was a summer school that started in March. Some years, there were just three, five or seven months of school. It wasn't until she reached her upper grades that Mildred attended school for nine-month terms. She attended and graduated from Northern Montana College in 1937. After teaching three years in rural schools, she earned her Montana Life Certificate from the Montana State University in Missoula.
Mildred married Melvin Monson in 1941. They had three children.

After the Boldt School burned down, she took a position as supervising teacher at the Zurich School. She was there for eight years. She retired from teaching in 1976 and in 1978 became Blaine County superintendent of schools. She also served two terms as trustee of School District #10 in Chinook.
