HAZEL BURNS, Obituary

CHINOOK Hazel I. Burns, 90, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at a Chinook nursing home due to natural causes.

Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. today in Edwards Funeral Chapel, with burial following in Kuper Memorial Cemetery.

Hazel was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Bismarck, N.D., to James and Harriet (Imus) Claridge. She moved with her family to Cherry Ridge in 1912. Hazel was raised there and attended school at Cherry Ridge School and Zurich High School.

She worked at Medicine Lake for a few years and married John D. Pike on July 7, 1934, in Harlem. They lived on a farm and ranch northwest of Hogeland until he died Nov. 6, 1944. Hazel moved to Zurich and worked at the Spa Grocery Store until she married Arthur Burns on March 11, 1948, in Fort Benton. She resided in Zurich until moving to the Sweet Memorial Nursing Home in 1998.

Hazel enjoyed crocheting and working crossword puzzles. She also playing the piano, which she and her husband, Art, played for many dances in the community.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur Burns on April 16, 1990, six brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Smith of Three Rivers, Mich., and Carol Kiefer of San Diego, Calif.; son, John Pike of Chinook; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
