Havre High School's speech and debate team dominated the Northern Division Tournament at Malta Saturday, qualifying 25 of its 29 competitors for the state tournament in Havre Friday and Saturday and winning the Class A sweepstakes competition with 119 points.
Havre's competition at the tournament included Class A schoos Browning High School and Fergus County High School from Lewistown.
Students placing in the top eight places in their event qualified for the state tournament.
Michele Holden earned first place in serious oral interpretation, with Gina Williams taking second and Heidi Nielson qualifying as an alternate for state.
Dean Koffler took second in Lincoln-Douglas debate, with Sarah Benson taking fifth and Angela Adams taking sixth.
Matt Welch and Peter Spangelo earned second in team debate, and Lucas Hamilton and Mike Inabnit took third and Matt Wagner and Andrew Dugdale took fifth.
Cherish Fehr placed third in original oratory, Tyler Crossley took sixth and Beth Hannah earned seventh.
Ross Coons took third in memorized public address, with Amy Allison earning eighth and Jennifer Wilkinson qualifying as an alternate.
In impromptu speaking, Tyrell Lundman took fourth, Jacob Lorang fifth and Jennifer Flesche is an alternate.
Tyler Dusek took fourth in expository speaking, with Richelle Molitor taking fifth and Kiera Peterson qualifying as an alternate.
Carly Swenson took third in humorous oral interpretation, and Joel Benson placed fourth and Katie'B Jarvis qualified as an alternate.
Andrew Edwards earned second in extemporaneous speaking, and Shawn McLain took fifth and Kelly Lamb placed eighth.
Havre's coaching staff said the state tournament this weekend is nearly set, although some details are still being finalized. There are still some judges needed, especially in debate.
