It was a little late coming in, but the final amounts collected for the United Way of Hill County 2002 campaign ended up better than expected.
"It turned out just fantastic," said Mike Evans, United Way president during the campaign. " It's fantastic to have such an outpouring of support for local nonprofit agencies."
United Way's total was $105,045, or 97 percent of its $110,000 goal. That is higher in both dollars and percentages than last year's collection, with the total of $100,500 at 91 percent of the $114,966 goal.
Evans said being at more than than 90 percent of goal for two years in a row likely a first for Hill County.
The support that people gave as a result on the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 seemed to have slowed local contributions, Evans said. The United Way board extended its campaign by more than a month.
The money was divided among 18 local groups at a meeting Thursday.
