Ole Robert Walen Jr., 90, Havre, died of natural causes Monday, Feb. 18, 2001, at a Havre care center.
Vigil service will begin Thursday at 7 p.m. at Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church, the
Rev. Robert Grosch officiating. A gathering at St. Jude's Knights of Columbus Hall will follow graveside services.
Bob was born June 6, 1911, in Havre to Margaret and O.R. Walen Sr. He attended school at St. Jude's School and Havre High School. He was a member of the first class to attend the new high school on Third Avenue.
He married Alene Seeley Jan. 27, 1930. They recently celebrated their 72nd anniversary. From the marriage, five children were born.
He was proud to spend his life on the land his father homesteaded.
Bob began working for Montana Power Company, reading meters. He eventually owned a service station on Second Street in Havre's east end. In 1941 he went to work for the Great Northern Railway, while he farmed and ranched on the Walen homestead. He retired from the railroad in 1973.
Bob and his wife wintered in Arizona after he retired, took many trips with family and friends, and he enjoyed his many hobbies including woodworking, silversmithing, and most recently using computers and the Internet.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles and the Happy Hi-Liners.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim; sisters, Olga, Margaret and Judy; daughters, Sharon Haugen and Jacquelyn Williams; and grandson Steve Allison and great-grandson Chad Haugen.
Bob is survived by his wife, Alene Walen of Havre; daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Allison of Mesa, Ariz.; sons, C.B. "Bud" Walen of Havre, Bob Walen of Billings and Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
