  • Beware the odious eggplant

    Sondra Ashton

Winter's plunging temperatures do not make me yearn to frolic in the vast outdoors. In fact, last week I huddled impatiently in wait for the red line to climb. While brilliant sun danced atop the icy-flaked blanket of snow, I ventured to walk the mere five blocks to the post office to pick up a week's worth of mail. I dragged home a bag of letters, bills, newspapers and six books that I had ordered in a moment of pre-Christmas insanity. I couldn't help it. Santa made me do...

For more than two decades, she has been the voice and face of Hill County government to many people. She has been active in most progressive-thinking programs that the county has undertaken. A Democrat, she has reached across the aisle to work with Republicans to make improvements in county programs. A resident of the rural part of the county, she has...

  • No one yet claims Havre lottery winnings

    John Kelleher

No one has claimed the $100,000 winnings from a Montana Cash lottery ticket that was purchased at Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods in Havre this week. Lottery spokeswoman Amber Conger said it is not unusual for people with big jackpots to take a while to claim their winnings. Winners can claim their money by mail, she said, but often big winners like to drive to Helena to personally pick up their winnings. But this often means people have to make arrangements to take time off work and travel to the capital. The winning numbers in...

  • No coverage for 70,000 Montana's worst legislative blunder

    Bill Thacheray

Generally, we should be grateful that the current Montana legislative session has come to an end for two years — unless we have a special session on some specific issue, such as health care. In general, the lawmakers managed to do some things right. They managed to close their session early, a positive move, and they managed to balance the state budget, which they are obligated by law to do. Most positive is their fix of state retirement programs (if it works), long overdue from past legislative gatherings. What they f...

  • Library director was never told why she was fired

    Betty Thompson

Editor: I have never written a letter to an editor before because I prefer to have my privacy. However, it is important to have my story told. I want it to be known what has happened to me. I was library director of the Havre-Hill County Library until March 25. To my unbelievable shock, about 4:30 that afternoon, four of the five board members came into my office, told me to sit down and tossed a letter on my desk. It was a letter of release as library director. I had no warning or reasons why. They told me that they... Full story

  • What was I reading about?

    Pam Burke

Writing headlines is an art form, one I don't practice myself, but for better or worse, every article, column and feature story has to have one. Whether written by the pros (yes, larger media sources hire people whose only job is to write headlines) or written by those of us who struggle, sometimes headlines just don't work out. Like: New drug offers novel approach to taming virus If you're like me, you saw that headline and expected to read about awesome nanobots armed with...

    Matthew Brown
