  • More private land closed to hunters

    Zach White

Havre Daily News/Lindsay Brown A newly placed "no trespassing" sign is seen on a fence post northeast of Havre. It's a new year, but the farmers and ranchers of northern Hill County still feel ignored by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and they have grown in solidarity to make their views known. Many of these landowners...

  • Science and a little white magic

    Pam Burke

Pam Burke My 4-year-old horse has super powers: He is naturally impervious to electrical shock. That's a bit of a problem when he lives on a place where electric fencing is used to keep horses out of danger. I know that seems like a bit of a contradiction: deliberate electrocution will keep him out of danger. But it's not like the jolt is powerful enough to stop his heart or anything — if it were I'd be dead several times over by now. It just, y'know, gets your attention a...

  • Hi-Line Darts and Laurels

    Tristan

Laurel — Sunnyside fifth-grader Kasee Henderson won the Geography Bee this week at Havre High School. He now stands a chance at moving forward in the national Geography Bee contest. Sadly, geography has been downgraded in many school districts because it is not included in the all-important standardized tests. It's good to see that it is an important part of the Havre curriculum. Praise to Kasee. Geography is still important. Learning about our world is an important part of being a good citizen. Kasee is on his way to b...

  • Republicans reduce state budget starting point

    Tristan

HELENA(AP) — Republican-led legislative budget panels are axing the standard inflationary increases normally used as a starting point for spending bills. The joint appropriations committees were instead voting Friday to start all agency budgets at 2012 levels. Critics argue the move doesn't ensure there will be enough money to pay for current programs authorized by law. House Speaker Mark Blasdel of Somers says it will be better for lawmakers to determine how much is needed rather than relying on automatic predictions. B...

  • Lights tame Bulldogs; Dawgs thump Skylights

    George Ferguson

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team isn't a one-dimensional offense. And the Lights are as stingy as ever defensively. Those things were quite clear Thursday night as Northern went into Dillon and beat the UM-Western Bulldogs 64-53 in a key Frontier Conference clash. The win was the No. 10 Lights first in Dillon in three years, and it kept them unbeaten in league play heading into Saturday's showdown at UM-Western. And the Lights beat the Bulldogs...
