  • Proposed amendment would protect parents' rights

    Kathy Sangray

Currently before Congress is the Parental Rights Amendment which would explicitly define the liberty of parents to direct the upbringing, education and care of their children as a fundamental right. Believe it or not, this right is not expressly stated in our Constitution, but is only an implied right. This shortcoming in our Constitution has led to the erosion of parental rights by court decisions and international law. Historically, the Supreme Court consistently maintained that parents possess a "fundamental right to...

  • Nature or nurture? The new, improved kochia

    Sondra Ashton

Recently I have been rethinking my personal war against kochia, a common noxious weed, otherwise known as tumbleweed, romanced in song by the Sons of the Pioneers, engraved in our western history by Zane Gray. One day the thought tumbled into my head, at that moment vacant and dreamy, that nobody ever wins a war. How true, I thought. So why do I stand out in the blazing sun, my hands encased in protective gloves, ripping kochia up by the roots? Oh, my aching back! Sondra...

  • Our View: Compliance checks help keep kids safe

    Tristan

Soon area police will be visiting places that sell alcohol in Hill County to determine if the sales meet state laws. Bars, taverns, restaurants and clubs are prohibited from selling alcohol to people under 21. For a long time in Montana, the law was a joke — widely ignored by all concerned. There has been a big change in public attitudes about drinking in recent years, and that has been reflected in the compliance checks conducted by Havre police and other organizations. Local businesses have had a good, though certainly n... Full story

  • Rehberg protesters were rude, arrogant

    Tristan

Editor: I attended the street meeting with Rep. Denny Rehberg. I don't know exactly what words to use the describe the mayhem caused by the opposition. The bad language and rude, false accusations about what he had done or maybe what he will do. There was very little conversation going on about what we need to do in America to get people back to work and the national debt. I do realize and sympathize with the Democrats and the bad decision they made when they hung their hats on this president. But all the yelling and... Full story
