  • Judge won't step down in Beach evidence case

    HELENA AP

A judge who denied convicted murderer Barry Beach's petition for a hearing on what Beach calls new evidence in the case said he won't assign a new judge to the case. Beach, who is serving 100 years in prison for the 1979 murder of 17-yearold Kim Nees of Poplar, is seeking a new trial, arguing that testimony by others during a state board of Pardons and Parole hearing in 2007 connected a group of girls to the murder. However, the board called that testimony double and triple hearsay that would not have been admissible in...

The recycling group asked for support from government bodies in Hill, Blaine and Chouteau counties to submit a Montana Department of Environmental Quality energy efficiency and conservation block grant. • Blue Ponies tame Mustangs

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News gferguson havredailynews com

It was a rare Tuesday night matchup for the Havre High boys basketball team, and in a game that went down to the wire, it was the Blue Pony defense helping to ensure the win. Tuesday night the Central A Ponies played host to the Class 2B Malta Mustangs where the Ponies came away with the 55-51 win at the Havre high gymnasium. It was the second win over the Mustangs this season, but it didn't come easy for the Ponies. "We were talking as coaches," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "And we didn't expect anything less from...

    Tristan

Thanks for supporting Tootsie Roll Drive Editor: Our thanks go out to the caring and loving people of Havre and the surrounding area and visitors from Canada for the generous support of our annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive for the developmentally challenged. • An idea for Fossil Festival

    Tristan

Editor: I want to thank everyone who helped put the Fossil Festival together. I know a lot of people did a lot of hard work to make the festival a winner. I was raised in Havre and enjoy returning and seeing old friends. I had an especially great time this year, as did everyone I talked to. I heard through a few people that financing the festival in the future may become a problem. I was having dinner with some of my friends and heard a terrific response to the problem. Why couldn't local businesses, such as motels, hotels...

  • Denying felons the right to vote is discriminatory

    Tristan

Denying felons the right to vote is discriminatory Editor: Recently, Sharon Browne and Roger Clegg of the Los Angeles Times argued that discriminatory laws are constitutional under the 15th Amendment if "there is no ... discriminatory intent," no matter what the actual effect of those laws. Thus, they say, laws denying convicted felons the right to vote for their entire lives are not discriminatory — even if the conviction is reversed — although by vastly disproportionate numbers, such laws deny only African-Americans and...

  • Dana Sapp Seidel would be a positive, proactive representative

    Tristan

Dana Sapp Seidel would be a positive, proactive representative Editor: Last winter, while helping do taxes at the North Central Senior Citizens Center with Mike Mariani and Larry Sapp, Larry informed me that his daughter Dana was going to run for House District 34 representative. I applaude her and all candidates who are willing to put themselves in what has become such a negative, angry, seemingly non-comromising, situation. Just running for office can envoke scorn from some quarters. I see Dana as a great representative as...

  • Choice not assured in Washington's dignified death law

    Tristan

Choice not assured in Washington's dignified death law Editor: I am a lawyer in Washington State where assisted suicide is legal. I disagree with Tom Preston's rosy description of our assisted suicide law. ("Dignified death doc to speak at Northern," Page 1 in Friday's Havre Daily News). Washington's law was passed via an initiative in which voters were promised that their "choice" would be assured. Our act, however, has significant gaps so that patient choice is not assured. For example, no witnesses are required at the...

Economic panel says recession ended in June 2009 JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — The longest recession the country has endured since the Great Depression ended in June 2009, a group that dates the beginning and end of recessions declared Monday. Previously the longest post World War II downturns were those in 1...

  • Blue Ponies ground Eagles

    Daniel Horton

Blue Ponies ground Eagles Daniel Horton The Havre High football team was back to playing with a pep in its step this weekend. And with several more big plays going in their favor, the Blue Ponies chalked another one up in the win column. On the road in Sidney, the Central A Ponies improved their record to 2-1 with a 21-14 win over the Eastern A Sidney Eagles Friday night. "The kids played pretty well," Havre High head coach Jason Christenson said. "It was a battle all four quarters. We got down early, but our kids kept...

  • Mariani puts up big return numbers

    George Ferguson

Mariani puts up big return numbers Marc Mariani has done just about every amazing thing a player can do on a football field in his young career. But on Sunday in Nashville, he had to overcome a tough moment, and in typical Mariani fashion, he did just that. Mariani and the Tennessee Titans, who lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 19-11 Sunday at LP Field, got off to a rough start. The Steelers' Antonio Brown returned the game's opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, then on wha...

  • EOU mounts a comeback

    George Ferguson

EOU mounts a comeback George Ferguson Shootouts have become the norm when Frontier Conference teams travel to LaGrande, Ore. But it's been a while since the Montana State University-Northern football team has been in one with the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers. However, on Saturday afternoon in LaGrande, that's exactly what the Lights fell victim to as EOU mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to edge the Lights 50-46. The Mounties scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on...

  • Havre High harriers compete with the best

    Daniel Horton

Havre High harriers compete with the best Daniel Horton In big meets it's easy for teams to become overwhelmed and lost in the numbers. But with hundreds of kids from 73 boys teams and 73 girls teams ranging from all over Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Washington, the Havre High cross country teams were able to stand out. On Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies were in Missoula where they took part in the Mountain West Meet. The Blue Pony girls finished as the No. 28 team out of 73 with 802 points. And the Pony boys finished in...

  • Igor passes near Bermuda as Category 1 hurricane

    JASON BRONIS,Associated Press Writer

HAMILTON, Bermuda — Hurricane Igor swept past Bermuda, lashing at the Atlantic island with high winds and furious waves as power failed in many areas, plunging people hunkered down at home into darkness. Tropical-storm-force winds continued to hit the island early Monday after passage of the broad storm, which had weakened to just above hurricane status as its center passed about 40 miles to the west just before midnight. Winds of 75 mph battered the island, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said gusts ranged u...

  • Keller brothers, Mark Peterson win agriculture awards

    John Kelleher

Keller brothers, Mark Peterson win agriculture awards John Kelleher [email protected] Organizers of the annual awards handed out at the Ag Appreciation Banquet honored three award recipients this year, while pulling a fast one on two of them. They told LeRoy Keller that his brother, Clarence Keller, was going to win the annual Ag Leader Award, and they told Clarence that LeRoy was going to win. Both were surprised when the two were announced as the co-winners at Saturday night's banquet, sponsored by the Havre...

  • Candidate promises impartiality

    John Kelleher

Beth Baker won't talk about her personal beliefs in her campaign for the Montana Supreme Court. Talking about how she feels about issues that might come before the court would help undermine public confidence in the court, she said. And her chief goal on the state's highest court would be to help improve public confidence in the court. She promises to take each case and apply the law and make an impartial decision, regardless of her personal beliefs. "The court has to take the lead role in preserving support for our legal sys...

  • Cold weather doesn't mar parade

    Zach White

More than an hour before the 30th Annual Havre Festival Days parade was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., people from all over the area had already started to line 5th Avenue in the chilly, gray drizzle of Saturday morning. The more entrepreneurial among them set up tables to dispense hot beverages and sweet treats. Meanwhile, lined up on Bullhook Drive, back into the Havre High School parking lot, this year's floats and their occupants were doing largely the same thing. The South Alberta Pipes and Drum band came down from...

  • Understanding anonymous complaints

    Jerry Nystrom

A great number of complainants wish to remain anonymous for various reasons. Understandably, everyone wants immediate action. This is perfectly fine, but people need to understand that an anonymous call is handled differently, as compared to one where a caller has identified him- or herself and files a statement. First, everyone needs to understand that an anonymous call is not treated with less importance because it is anonymous. All calls are investigated. An anonymous call does, however, slow the process down a bit. A...

  • Bipartisan support for 'cap the rate'

Rep. Anders Blewett, D-Great Falls, and Rep. Jesse O'Hara, R-Great Falls

Bipartisan support for 'cap the rate' Rep. Anders Blewett, D-Great Falls, and Rep. Jesse O'Hara, R-Great Falls Examples of true bipartisan agreement seem to be all too rare these days, but we've found one. Both of us agree that 400 percent interest is too high, and that something must be done to protect Montana consumers and the state's economy from predatory lending practices. That's why we're supporting Initiative 164. If passed, this initiative will do what the Montana Legislature has failed at during every session since...

  • Kudos to Seidels, Pacific Steel and Recycling

    Tristan

Kudos to Seidels, Pacific Steel and Recycling Editor: I am a single parent raising a 10-year-old son. I do rely on the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line as a safe and enjoyable place for my son while I am at work. The club has great programs and is a godsend to many working parents. Like all nonprofit organizations, the club does struggle financially, not only to keep its doors open, but also to offer a variety of programs. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Scott Seidel and Dana Sapp Seidel, owners of ACE Towing,...

Shot fired at BIA employee Tim Leeds — [email protected] The Blaine County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shot fired Wednesday at a Bureau of Indian Affairs employee who was driving toward Harlem just west of the Milk River Bridge. Ralph Page, a BIA rangeland management specialist, reported that someone in a passing car fired a shotgun at his vehicle about 12:10 p.m., shattering the driver's side window of the pickup, Blaine County Undersheriff Pat Pyette said this morning.
