So on behalf of Marge Matzke we would like to extend a very special thank you to the YouthBuild students from the MSU-Northern campus for shoveling her walkways on Wednesday, Jan. 19. She is 83, is not able to do it...

LOLITA C BALDOR PAULINE JELINEK Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Military training to apply the new law allowing gays to serve openly will begin in February and will move quickly, senior Pentagon leaders said Friday. They said there is no intent to delay but would not guarantee full implementation of the repeal this year. The hedge on scheduling came despite assertions by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union speech this week that the repeal of the 17-year-old ban will be finalized in 2011. Speaking to Pentagon reporters, Gen. James Cartwright said he e...

BRUCE SCHREINER SARAH SKIDMORE AP Business Writers

Taco Bell says a legal beef over the meat in its tacos is bull. The fast-food chain took out full-page ads in at least nine major newspapers and launched a YouTube campaign featuring its president Friday to proclaim its taco filling is 88 percent beef. A false-advertising lawsuit filed last week that caused an online stir alleges the company's filling doesn't have enough beef to be called that. The lawsuit seeks to make the company stop calling it "beef," and pay the suing law firm's bill. Taco Bell trumpeted "Thank you for s...

The Warriors beat Northern 59-43, ending the Skylights two-game Frontier Conference winning streak. Northern was able to hang tough early on, trailing by just a few points for much of the fi...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Getting off to a good start on the road is something the Montana State University-men's basketball team knows is important. But Thursday night in Lewiston, Idaho, the No. 19 Lights didn't do that. Instead, Northern fell behind host Lewis-Clark State right away, and the result was a 70-61 Frontier Conference road loss. David Maddock hit a 3-pointer at the 15:46 mark to put the Lights up 9-6. However, LC's defense kept the Lights scoreless for the next 8:42 of the game while the Warriors went on a 15-0 run. That put LC ahead...

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Another slow start was the demise for the Havre High girls basketball team. Thursday night at the Havre High gymnasium the Central A Blue Ponies suffered a non-conference loss, falling to the Class AA Great Falls Bison 51-39. With the loss the Ponies remain 2-5 in the conference, but dropped to 3-8 overall. Both wins came at the hands of HHS, one in Great Falls and now one in Havre. "It's not like...

Tonight at 5 p.m. at the HHS gymnasium the Ponies will host the B-C Conrad Cowboys and Forsyth Dogies. MATT GOURAS Associated Press

HELENA — U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, a key figure in developing the federal health care law, is selling the program back home to a Republican-led Legislature openly hostile to what they derisively call "Obamacare." Baucus, speaking Friday afternoon to a joint session of Montana lawmakers, said he understands there are strong feelings but argued both sides should work to make it better in certain areas. Most Republicans in the room sat stoically through his speech. Made the Democrats' sales pitch Baucus reinforced the high points o...

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press

HELENA— Republicans who have long blasted health care laws they feel put the government between doctors and patients are now backing a bill that orders doctors to perform an ultrasound before an abortion. Republicans backing the bill said they don't think such ultrasounds are a medical mandate but rather an attempt to prevent a procedure they feel should be illegal anyway. They argued it is not hypocritical to support the government intervention in cases of abortion. House Bill 280, the focus of a tense hearing Friday in t...
