  • FWP spends money in the wrong places

    Tristan

Editor: After several hours of thinking about how I would begin this letter I decided to start by saying, "Where Oh Where did the Montana Department. of Fish, Wildlife and Parks learn how to budget funds?" In a recent — very small — article in the Havre Daily News (Monday, page 3) it was stated that the department would harvest 200 excess urban deer in Helena and have the meat processed for the Helena Food Share, but "the agency is still determining if it can pay for the processing this year." What a shock. The Dep...

  • The fiscal cliffhanger: Coming to theaters soon

    Pam Burke

One of the things that becomes obvious after a few years in the news industry is that most stories come back around. Some events are annual or regularly occurring, some behaviors are perennial or too typical, and some stories just don't go away. But sometimes, when we're lucky, a new story (or an old story in new clothes) comes along with the perfect elements for front page coverage. Many times those front-page stories are tragic, and they are covered with a heavy heart....

  • George Ferguson Column: Another year, more magical moments

  • Trains carrying more oil across US amid boom

JOSH FUNK, MATTHEW BROWN, Associated Press

BILLINGS (AP) — Energy companies behind the oil boom on the Northern Plains are increasingly turning to an industrial-age workhorse — the locomotive — to move their crude to refineries across the U.S., as plans for new pipelines stall and existing lines can't keep up with demand. Delivering oil thousands of miles by rail from the heartland to refineries on the East, West and Gulf coasts costs more, but it can mean increased profits — up to $10 or more a barrel — because of higher oil prices on the coasts. That works out...
