  • Skylights strike down Warriors

    George Ferguson

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team has been in some dramatic games this season. But no game the Skylights have won or lost has been as dramatic as Northern's wire-to-wire upset of the No. 6 Lewis-Clark State Warriors Friday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The Skylights toppled the mighty Warriors 55-48, which started a weekend that also saw them lose to the No. 20 Westminster Griffins Saturday night on the same floor in Havre. But a split...

  • Florida highway pileup kills at least 10 people

    MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A long line of cars and trucks collided one after another early Sunday on a dark Florida highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were instantly blinded. At least 10 people were killed. When rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans because the poor visibility made it difficult to find victims in wreckage that was strewn for nearly a mile, police said. Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the pileup south of Gainesville on Interstate 75, which had...

  • Ice Hawks sweep in Miles City

    George Ferguson

The Havre Ice Hawks found some much-needed success on the ice this weekend. And they did it on the road. Saturday and Sunday, the Ice Hawks were in Miles City to face the combined squad of Miles City/Glasgow and the Ice Hawks won both games. On Saturday, the Ice Hawks won 7-3 as the Havre offense put plenty of pressure on with 48 shots in the game. Havre's Dustin Armstrong scored a power play goal at the 6:42 mark of the first period, part of a three-goal barrage in the...

  • Rustlers run by Pony girls

    Daniel Horton

The Havre High girls basketball team has been trying everything it can to get out of this little bit of a slump they have found themselves in, but over the weekend in Great Falls, CMR didn't help matters any. Saturday in Great Falls, the Central A Blue Ponies took on the No. 3 Class AA CMR Rustlers. But after both teams got off to a slow start, the Rustlers defeated the Ponies 57-26. HHS was taking on a very talented, and much bigger CMR squad this weekend. And while the Ponies put up a fight early, they just couldn't keep...

  • CMR wrangles Blue Ponies

    Daniel Horton

At times, the Havre High boys basketball team shows signs of great basketball play. And one of those times was over the weekend against a top Class AA squad. Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies hosted the CMR Rustlers. The Ponies played outstanding in the first half, but unfortunately the story line changed somewhat in the second half, as the Bison went on to come from behind and defeat the Ponies 57-38 at the Havre High gymnasium. The first half of play was some of the best basketball the Ponies have turned in all season. It...

  • George Ferguson Column: Friday night in the Armory was a lot of fun

    George Ferguson

In sports, it's a rare occasion when everything just seems to go right for a night. Actually, in the world of college basketball, it's rare that everything goes right for more than 10 minutes at a time. Just ask any coach who dares to stalk the sidelines of a basketball court. But on Friday night in Havre, it was one of those good nights for the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams, as well as all Northern fans. The Lights and Skylights were...

  • MSU-N Notebook: Skylights execute a perfect game plan

    George Ferguosn

As far as upsets go, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team's win over Lewis-Clark State Friday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse was a big one. After all, the Warriors came to Havre as the No. 6 team in the NAIA and with a stellar 18-2 overall record. However, it wasn't as if the Skylights were a slouch or essentially had no chance going into the Frontier Conference showdown. It was quite the contrary. Northern has had a tremendous season and has proved its capable of beating anybody on any given ni...

  • HHS grapplers edge Forsyth

    Daniel Horton

The weekend's matchups got shuffled around a bit for the Havre High wrestling program, but even with one team less than expected, and quite a few forfeits, the Blue Ponies still survived senior night with a nice win. Friday night at the Havre High gymnasium, the Blue Ponies were set to host Conrad and Forsyth for two non-conference duals. But when Conrad was forced to cancel the trip, Friday's action came down to just the Ponies and Dogies. The Ponies grabbed the narrow, 45-36 win over the top Class B-C program in the state,...

  • Sweep: Lights close out Warriors, Griffins

    George Ferguson

Reaching the halfway point of the Frontier Conference men's basketball season means the Montana State University-Northern Lights will have only two home games in the month of February. That's what made this weekend's home tilts with rivals Lewis-Clark State and Westminster College so big. And knowing they are going to have to go out on the road, the No. 12 Lights finished the month of January in dramatic fashion. With a dominating win over LC State already in hand, the Lights...

  • Skylights earn a split in California

    George Ferguson

If the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team was looking for a test prior to Frontier Conference play, the Skylights got it this past weekend in California. Northern went 1-1 in a pair of road games in the Jersey Mike's Classic in Santa Clarita, Calif., losing to nationally-ranked The Master's College on Friday afternoon, but rebounding to beat Hope International University on Saturday afternoon. • Skylights and Saints open Frontier play

    George Ferguson

Frontier Conference basketball in November. It's a new concept, but its' one that becomes a reality tonight at the Armory Gymnasium. In the biggest game of a still young season, the Montana State University-Northern Skylights will host Carroll College tonight at 6 in the Frontier opener for both schools. The league had to have every team each play one conference game before January, due to the unbalanced schedule, with the addition of Dickinson State. And tonight, it's...

    Tim Leeds

Montana's two U. S. senators issued a release Wednesday praising Senate passage of an amendment restoring the U. S. military's ability to buy biofuels. A House defense authorization bill and the Senate version had prohibited the military from buying or producing biofuels if it could buy or produce petroleum fuel more cheaply. The amendment passed 62-37, with all but two "nay" votes — from Sens. Jim Webb, D-Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W. Va. — coming from Republicans. Eleven Republicans did, however, join the Democrats in...
