DAVID ESPO, SHANNON MCCAFFREY, Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wept Friday as he recalled his late mother's end-of-life illnesses, a moment of poignancy in a notably negative Republican presidential Iowa caucus campaign with four unpredictable days yet to run. "I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich told an audience of women as he tried to regain his composure. The tears flowed as the former speaker was responding to questions about his mother from a pollster and longtime political ally. AP Photo/Charlie Riedel R... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: Instead of saying goodbye, I'll just say thanks for a very special 2011

    George Ferguson

There are just two days left in 2011. It sure did go fast. I guess people tell me the older you get the faster the years go by and I'm starting to believe them. It seemed like just yesterday I was covering the MSU-Northern men's basketball team winning the Frontier Conference championship in Helena. But that was nine months ago. It seems like just yesterday I was watching my tennis teams compete through a grueling, nearly all-night divisional tennis tournament in Bozeman.... Full story

  • North Forty: Shine little glow-in-the-dark halter, glimmer

    Pam Burke

I recently saw a catalog advertising rope-style horse halters made from glow-in-the-dark rope. No kidding. According to the ad, the rope is white in the daylight, then glows bright fluorescent green in the dark. Having owned more than my fair share of dark brown horses, I can see the appeal. Horses can't contain themselves in the daylight — they have to run away from you just to hear you cuss, or run to you to frisk you for treats (or possible treats, or the essence of the s...

  • Our View: Century-old Hill County faces challenges and very interesting future

    Tristan

Starting Sunday, Hill County will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In 1912, the cowboy town of Havre was rapidly changing into a city of its own — the business, educational and cultural center of the Hi-Line. Many of those who arrived in the are in that era took a huge gamble, leaving their lives back east so they could plant their hopes on the Hi-Line. They worked hard to provide a life for themselves and worked harder to build a vibrant community that they would now call home. Their work was chronicled in the history book "...

  • Decades-old cyanide debate still an open question

    Zach White

Despite years of heap-leach mining in the area, no one in Zortman is concerned about the situation on the mountains that loom over the town. Their water is fine. "Our wells are all out on the Ruby Gulch, " Clayton Wallace, owner of the Miner's Club Bar and Cafe in Zortman, said. "I never have been worried about it. The water samples say we're 1 percent purer than Lewistown and Lewistown is supposed to have the purest water in the state. " In fact, Wallace thinks there is plenty of opportunity to start up the Zortman Landusky...

The city of Havre was 18 years old in 1912, but it was just coming into its own. Telephones were unheard of just a couple of years earlier, but now there were several hundred in the city. The Havre Power Co. provided electricity to the city, and there were streetlights every couple of blocks or so. Sacred Heart Hospital opened in 1912. The city's first hospital, it was... Full story
