  • Talent equals History

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 7, 2017

If being a four-time state champion was easy, then more than 27 wrestlers would have done it in the history of Montana High School wrestling. The fact is, winning state championships, as a team or as an individual, is incredibly difficult. But being a four-time individual wrestling champion, which is what Havre’s Jase Stokes will be gunning for in Billings at the All-Class State tournament, is a different matter entirely. Certainly, it’s not easy, not even close. “It takes...

Both were approved 5-0 by the council. Council members Terry Lilletvedt, Karen Swenson and Matthew Boucher were absent. As under the previous ordinance, RV and trailer owners will be able to remain parked on city streets for a period of no more than 48 hours. "We think that is a...

  • Burglaries continue at Beaver Creek

    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 7, 2017

The Beaver Creek Park superintendent said Monday night the latest stint of park cabin burglaries has been the worst he’s seen during his entire 12-year stint as superintendent. “It’s getting kind of scary,” Superintendent Chad Edgar told Hill County Park Board members during its monthly board meeting. Edgar said it is not uncommon to have cabins broken into sporadically, but this last stint, he believes, is unlike anything and may be the worse since he’s been in the park. Edgar said his neighbors had been broken into rece...

  • We can do something about pharmaceutical costs

    Updated Feb 7, 2017

People in every corner of Montana rely on prescription drugs to treat illnesses and conditions ranging from mild to severe. Our most vulnerable neighbors need access to these drugs even more than the rest of us. Senior citizens, people with chronic conditions, and sick children all use prescriptions to provide them comfort from pain and, in the case of those with the worst sicknesses, keep them alive. Unfortunately, our most vulnerable people are subject to the greed of pharmaceutical companies who use the difficult...

  • Veterans care should not be partisan

    Updated Feb 7, 2017

As I look out my window at the cold and snowy winter scene that is currently blanketing Montana, I’m reminded there are homeless veterans in our state who are struggling to find a warm place to sleep and don’t have these idyllic visions of snow and blankets that I do. There is absolutely no excuse for veterans being homeless in our state. Zero. Zip. None. These are the folks who were on the front lines fighting for our freedoms and to keep roofs over our head. I can’t understand why Montana hasn’t built 10 assisted living...

  • Montana, let's make voting great again

    Updated Feb 7, 2017

Jan. 20 was my last day at work. Under the Obama administration, I served as a political liaison for NASA on Capitol Hill. I watched up close while 2016 revealed the strengths and weaknesses of our democracy. As the American West opens up before my windshield on the drive home to Montana, I am compelled to say why I pledge to vote in Montana’s upcoming special election. I pledge to vote for many reasons, but this year, I am mostly concerned about the state of our democracy. The Economist Intelligence Unit downgraded the U...

  • Tester's support of coal regs puts Montana jobs at risk

    Updated Feb 7, 2017

There are several Democrats who represent coal states in the United States Senate. Clair McCaskil of Michigan, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and, of course, Montana’s own Jon Tester. But Tester is unique among this group. While those other coal-state Democrats have established a track record of working to protect coal jobs, Tester has consistently voted to support every Obama-era regulation designed to kill the coal industry. Case in point is the Senate’s vote on the Orw...

  • Hearing has negative outcome but is positive experience

    Updated Feb 7, 2017

Editor’s note: Due to a misunderstanding on the part of the Havre Daily News, regular submissions from state Sen. Russ Tempel, R-Chester, have not been printed. —— I hope this article gets into the paper this week in Havre. Each week I sent an update on what is happening in the Legislature to my District 14 newspapers. The Liberty County Times and the River Press Paper had been publishing the articles but I recently discovered that the Havre Daily News didn’t understand my intention. It’s too bad that the articles didn’t ma...

By MATT VOLZ Associated Press HELENA — Montana legislators are taking another look at whether to abolish the death penalty after a judge blocked the state from carrying out executions because it has no access to a drug used in lethal injections. Clergy, young conservative lawmakers and an exonerated Arizona death-row inmate urged the House Judiciary Committee Monday to pass a bill abolishing the death penalty. The maximum penalty would become life in prison without parole under the measure by Rep. Adam Hertz, R-Missoula. ...

The Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team was back in the Havre Ice Dome this past weekend, but the visiting Great Falls Americans made sure it wasn’t a happy homecoming for the Ice Hawks. Saturday, Great Falls blanked the Ice Hawks 6-0. The Americans scored three goals in the first period, two more in the second and one in the third. Havre’s offense had plenty of chances with 35 shots on goal, but the Americans made save after save. Havre goalie Kinzee Peterson stopped 22...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 7, 2017

Recently, the Havre High girls basketball team found itself in a bit of a slump. After winning 10 of 11 games to start the season, HHS lost three straight and one of the teams that beat the Blue Ponies was Malta. The loss to the M-Ettes was the second of the three in a row and tonight, Havre will look for some for payback on the road against the defending Class B state champions. Tip-off time is set for 7 p.m. "Yeah we are really looking forward to it," HHS head coach Dustin...
