The crash happened after 1 p.m., about seven miles east of Chinook, when Dannels' car veered across the centerline and hit the truck head-on, killing Dannels. John Kelleher|Updated Feb 8, 2016

Hal Stearns is enamoured with his home state of Montana, especially its small towns. He grew up in Harlowton and has visited many of the state's tiny communities. Each of them, he said, have interesting, historic and quirky facts that should be recorded. "There are stories in each of these towns that should be preserved," he said. "More of these small towns should have museums." Stearns was a guest speaker Friday at the North Central Senior Center in the Havre Hometown...

    John Kelleher|Updated Feb 8, 2016

More than $36,000 for student scholarships was raised at the We Love Northern Ball Saturday night. "We had 180 people at the ball, and that's a good number to have," said Jim Bennett, executive director of the MSU-Northern Alumni Foundation. "It's kind of a formal affair, and we don't want to pack people in." "I think people have a good time and enjoyed themselves," he said. A new format was tried this year, Bennett said, and it appeared to be successful. There were no...

The chancellor revealed the list at a deans-level meeting last week at Montana State University in Bozeman. • Nothing good happens after 10 p.m.

    Updated Feb 8, 2016

My sister often asks me “What is the most interesting case you have going?” Of course, I cannot give any names (not to protect the innocent, but to protect the guilty), but it seems there is never a lack of “interesting” cases. Some time ago I had a case that showed the undesirable underbelly of our community. This was a set of circumstances I, who has lived here all my life, knew nothing about. To begin this discussion, I set curfews in criminal release orders at 10 p.m., often stating: “Nothing good happens after 10 p.m....

By Robin Cunningham, Dan Vermillion and Ed Tompkins As Montanans we live close to the land. Our unique way of life is directly tied to the quality of our lands, waters, fish and wildlife. We are people who are counting on cold, clean waters and an abundance of trout. The quality of that resource directly impacts not only our personal recreation but also our business interests and our livelihoods. Each year guides, outfitters, fly shop owners, restaurants, hotels and their employees watch Montana’s snowpack anxiously. In an e...

  • Ponies kick the Cowboys

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 8, 2016

It's funny how quickly things can change in sports. The Havre High boys basketball team for instance, needed a legendary comeback to prevent a four-game losing streak. After an unlikely win over CMR and a dominant performance over Conrad last Friday night, suddenly, the Blue Ponies are on a roll. Havre backed up its win over the Rustlers with an impressive performance on the road against Conrad. The Ponies, who beat the Cowboys by four earlier in January in Havre, trounced...

  • Skylights knock out the Warriors

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 8, 2016

If timing is everything, than the Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team seems to have perfect timing right now. After losing back-to-back road games last week, the No. 20 Skylights had fallen to 5-5 in the rugged Frontier Conference. But, on the road again, that all changed this past weekend. Northern followed up a Thursday night pasting of Montana Tech with its biggest win of the season Saturday night in Lewiston, Idaho, as the Skylights turned away No. 1...

  • Lights demolish Embry-Riddle at HHS

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 8, 2016

In front of a big crowd at Havre High, made up of many high school teams here for divisional tournaments in Havre and Chinook...

This was the first year the East and the Central combined for one, 11-team tournament. The name and the competition may have been different, but the result was the same. Havre dominated the competition and won its 14th straight divisional crown with 273.5 points. The Blue Ponies, who hosted the meet at the Havre High g...

  • Area grapplers shine at Northern B-C

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 8, 2016

CHINOOK — Anything that took place on the wrestling mats of the Chinook High School gymnasium at Saturday's Northern B-C divisional is insignifigant compared to what the entire Sugarbeeter family, the Chinook community, and for that matter, the entire Montana wrestling community is now enduring after the passing of Chinook senior wrestler Jesse Dannels. Dannels, a star wrestler, who finished second at Saturday's B-C divisional at 182 pounds, was also a two-way standout on C...
