  • Beeters fight their way to divisionals

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

Everything seemed to be falling into place for the Chinook Sugarbeeters to win their third straight District 9C girls championship. Chinook looked absolutely dominant in the 9C quarterfinals, and had lost to a 9C team just once all year heading into this weekend’s 9C tournament. But things didn’t go as planned in Thursday night’s semifinals, and by Friday night, the Beeters found themselves playing for their Northern C lives — and playing against an arch rival that ultimat... Full story

  • Chinook bounces back to take third

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

Because the new District 9C is allowed to send three teams to the Northern C divisionals, the championship game at the 9C tournament was not the only game with a lot on the line Saturday night. Thanks to the third berth at divisionals, when Chinook and Chester/J-I met in the 9C consolation game Saturday inside the HHS gymnasium, the season of each team was on the line. But, in the end, it was the more experienced Sugarbeeters that came out on top 67-59. The Beeters (16-6),... Full story

  • Blue Pony girls complete a perfect Central A regular season

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

The Havre High boys basketball team played Browning Saturday in a game that was essentially meaningless in the standings. But, when things were all said and done in the HHS gymnasium, the Blue Ponies had to have some concern about the outcome. Havre, which will meet Browning this Friday in the semifinals of the Central A divisionals in Great Falls, will need to play much better than it did Saturday against the Indians, who came to Havre and scored an impressive road win by... Full story

Then, Glacier tried its hand against Helena, the only team the Nationals have not beaten this season and...

  • George Ferguson Column: 9C tournament gets better and better

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

Two new teams, a new schedule and more exciting games. That was what the 2015 District 9C tournament was about heading into last Wednesday. But even with all the changes, it was really as if nothing had changed — because no matter what, the 9C tournament is special. It’s special to the players, the fans, the schools, and it’s extremely special to Havre. And make no mistake, this past week was indeed a special one at the Havre High gymnasium. First and foremost, the week was p... Full story

  • Lights win a big one at Westminster

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern men’s basketball team was on the brink following Thursday night’s loss at UM-Western. The Lights had dipped to two games below .500 and were in danger of not making the Frontier Conference playoffs. And all of that made Saturday night’s road game at Westminster even more of a challenge than the trip to Salt Lake City usually is — and it’s always challenging. But, as the Lights have done so often this season, they rose to the challenge... Full story

  • Lights crown three regional champs

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2015

Going into Saturday’s NAIA West Regional Qualifier, Montana State University-Northern head coach Tyson Thivierge noted just how tough the region is, and always is. And, after a busy day inside the Armory Gymnasium, Thivierge’s assessment of the tournament was spot on. The No. 5 Lights struggled to keep pace in the team title race, as Northern was without two of its top point getters in senior Jared Miller and junior Willie Miller. But, the Lights, who finished fifth with 83.... Full story
