  • Park board discusses weed invasion, new signs

    The Hill County Park Board held lengthy discussions Monday concerning invasive weeds in Beaver Creek Park. Conrad Nystrom of the Hill County Conservation District said that the parks board has given the conservation district permission to move forward with the weed removal process. Nystrom’s group is seeking ways to fund this project and remove a variety of weeds on the park such as houndtongue.     In the meeting that Chippewa Cree Business Committee Chairman Ken Blatt St. Marks was ordered to call in order for the council to discuss charges against him and the possibility of his impeachment, there was only one necessary person not present — St. Marks.     US Bank Park will be spruced up because of the work of Havre Trials. The nonprofit organization that is trying to build up Havre's system of walking and bike trails will sign an agreement with the city of Havre that will give Havre Trails the authority to secure grants to get the work done. Havre Trails will apply this week for a $20,000 grant from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Havre Trails hopes to refurbish the walkways on the 20-acre park, which is adjacent to Montana...

    It’s been 18 months since Havre Police chief Kirk Fitch retired, and no permanent successor has been named. That’s almost as long as Fitch had been chief. Assistant Chief Gabe Matosich has been acting chief during that time. Havre resident Bill Lanier asked Mayor Tim Solomon at Monday’s City Council meeting just what was up. “We haven't heard anything,” he said.   • Council sets Top 10 for street repairs

    Havre City Council has taken the first step toward holding a referendum this fall on a proposal for a 20-year, $30 million project to upgrade the city’s aging streets and stormwater network. The project would begin by making repairs to 10 priority projects then spread to other parts of the city. The entire project would cost owners of a $100,000 home about $1 per day in new taxes, city officials said.
