  • FULL CIRCLE

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 5, 2017

All good things must come to an end. For Montana State University-Northern wrestling star Ben Stroh, the end to his wrestling career is near. At least competitively. But no matter what happens to Stroh at this weekend’s NAIA national tournament in Topeka, Kansas, there’s no denying it’s been an incredible ride. In fact, incredible isn’t even a word that fits Stroh’s wrestling career, one that’s been going for so long now, he really has trouble recalling when it all started. “W...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 3, 2017

For the first two and a half quarters Friday night against the University of Montana Western, it seemed that the Montana State University-Northern Skylights, couldn't buy a bucket. But thanks to an outstanding defensive effort, the Skylights hung around in the Frontier Conference semifinal inside the Armory Gymnasium, just long enough for Jacy Thompson to knock down two clutch 3-pointers, the last coming with 13.5 seconds left to give MSU-N the 44-42 win. Northern will... Full story

  • Darkened beacons illuminate 'plane' ol' bad government

    Updated Mar 3, 2017

In 1929, just 26 years after the Wright Brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk, a transcontinental airway beacon system was christened to safely guide pilots across America in all kinds of weather. This modest but practical network blazed the trail for today’s sophisticated modern airliners that almost fly themselves with previously unheard-of levels of safety. Today, that system exists in only one place in the entire United States: Montana. Seventeen beacons stand silent sentry on craggy passes from Bozeman to Great Falls, from Hel...

  • #Not my time-space continuum

    Pam Burke|Updated Mar 3, 2017

Growing up an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, I was always comfortable with the idea of reality not being what we expect it to be and even looked for signs that I was living in or had slipped into an alternate reality. Well, folks, I think I have arrived. In 2008 a majority of Americans and the Electoral College voted into the office of President of the United States the first African American president in the U.S. Barack Obama was a young, inexperienced...

  • Halftime update from the state Senate: Balancing the budget is a balancing act

    Updated Mar 3, 2017

When my wife Barb and her partner opened their restaurant in 1985, money was tight — both for the business and at home. They started with lunches only, and then as income allowed, they hired more employees and offered dinners and catering services. In 32 years since, they’ve been successful by always finding the right balance between income and expenses. When I look at the state budget, the same principles that drive business success come to mind: when money is tight, take a hard look at expenses and adjust. The good new...

  • Grief Poem Mar. 3, 2017

    Updated Mar 3, 2017

Missing our mate! There is a face we can’t forget, no matter time of year. Through rough season, those stormy days; at times our way’s not clear. Though he is gone we won’t forget the things he loved to do. Some guys liked cars, horses or cows or fish the whole day through. There is a chill that Autumn brings with flashes of regret. But time slips by and brings to light pleasures we won’t forget. Each one of us who’s lost a Mate, we miss them, oh, so much. Their sparkling eyes, their special love, and oh, their gentle to...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Mar 3, 2017

You know, Lord, here comes March, the windy month. Some say that March is the trumpet month, as the winds bring their loud sounding trumpets with them and wear them at their lips, wearing out our ears, perchance? There are even some folks who actually like the racket? They say that to them, the winds are having their Fourth of July in March! Well, it’s a lot cooler than in July, and if you’re in the brass band, at least you’re not going to get red in the face blowing the brass horn as you might, if you were doing so in July....

  • Out Our Way:

    Updated Mar 3, 2017

Mark 12: 1-12 Out our way, most folks know that livestock needs to be handled with some common sense. I recently read a novel about a World War I battle in which mules were used for transporting supplies, ammo and the wounded. The men assigned to handle the mules were all from Austrailia and New Zealand and most were "stockmen" - their term for cowboys - but the officer in charge was from England and knew nothing about livestock. He only knew that his rank and breeding put him...

  • The One the Skylights Wanted

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 3, 2017

Last Friday night, Montana State University-Northern head women’s coach Chris Mouat talked about how incredibly hard it was for his Skylights to beat the resurgent UM-Western Bulldogs three times this winter. But if the Skylights want to play for a Frontier Conference championship for the second time in three years, they’ll have to beat Western, again. Tonight, the No. 12 Skylights (22-7) will square off against the No. 20 Bulldogs (23-7) inside the Armory Gymnasium for a ber... Full story

  • Strike Gold: Ponies advance

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 3, 2017

The Havre High girls basketball team faced a daunting challenge Thursday, taking on the defending state champions in their hometown right off the bat. Yet it was the Blue Ponies, not the Butte Central Maroons, that looked at home in the Butte Civic Center, as Havre led wire-to-wire for an opening-round, 55-41 victory in the quarterfinals of the Class A state tournament. “The kids played great,” HHS head coach Dustin Kraske said. “They executed our gameplan very well.” The win...
