Havre’s Pizza Hut is holding a benefit Thursday for 10-month-old Payton KillEagle, whose grandmother Iris KillEagle said was having surgery today to remove a cancerous tumor from her liver. “They tell us she’ll be (in Seattle) through June,” KillEagle said. She said the problem was discovered about two months ago, when Payton was 8 months old. Payton had been undergoing chemotherapy, which has been halted until she has...

    Tim Leeds|Updated Mar 28, 2017

The Fort Belknap Indian Reservation has endorsed President Donald Trump’s nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court. “In sum, while we do not expect that Judge (Neil) Gorsuch will agree with tribal interests on every issue, we also believe that he is immensely well-qualified, and we are confident that Judge Gorsuch is a mainstream, commonsense Westerner who will rule fairly on Indian Country matters,” the Fort Belknap Indian Community said in a statement cited in a press release issued by the office of U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-M...

Ramona Stump of Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation said she came home last Tuesday after work to find her house on fire. "The house is completely burned down. I lost everything," she said Monday. "I was in tears all last week." The fire, which she said is being investigated, may have been the fault of her sister, who told her she may have forgotten to put out a cigarette. Stump said she was picked up by her daughter from work at a local bar at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. "We're driving...

  • Legislature gets through Week 11

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

I started the week spending a bit of time and sharing information with some of the Fort Benton junior and senior classes, along with their bus driver and teachers. I understand some students had to travel to D.C. and the rest got to come to Helena. It was a nice group that seemed to enjoy hearing about session and its bill-making processes. We did pass the Marijuana Bill, Senate Bill 333, out of Senate on Friday. This was after two more informational meetings held Monday and Wednesday. In all, both parties came up with 25...

  • Tester, what has changed with Gorsuch?

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

Sen. Jon Tester, In 2006 the United States Senate unanimously confirmed Judge Neil Gorsuch to a seat on the federal 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, without dissent or criticism. Please inform Montana what Judge Gorsuch has done since 2006 to cause you to be unwilling to announce support for his confirmation now. What decisions has he written since 2006 that are unacceptable to you? What breaches of professional ethics has he committed since 2006 that cause you to withhold support? Please tell Montana what has changed about...

  • Quist good for singing, Gianforte good for Congress

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

Editor, We enthusiastically support Greg Gianforte for Congress, urging Montana voters to elect him to the House of Representatives in the special election on May 25th. We also urge Montana voters to not be deceived by the Democratic Party misinformation about Greg. First, Greg is not a rich outsider to Montana. He moved to Montana nearly 20 years ago, long before he became a millionaire. He and his wife, Susan, began their business at their kitchen table in Bozeman with $5,000 and went on to make it an extremely successful...

  • Tell Gianforte to buy a razor, not a House seat

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

Editor, Greg Gianforte’s ads and website show him with about a week’s worth of beard growth. My guess is that some big-money-funded focus group showed that voters thought that the week of stubble made Gianforte look more rugged or common. I can just picture the political consultant’s memo: “Go with a week’s growth on your beard, an old camo hat, no tie, and wear a canvas shirt, so you will look like a real Montana working man.” Greg, you aren’t fooling anyone. We know you are from New Jersey. We know you sold your software...

  • Colstrip bill could derail Montana's clean energy future

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

Colstrip’s old coal-fired power units are losing money and that means their days are numbered. Units 1 and 2 are closing by 2022 at the latest and maybe sooner. We need to make sure Colstrip’s operators fulfill their responsibilities in helping the state deal with the economic loss to workers, the community, and the environment. But, we have another problem. Legislation has been proposed that doesn’t just hold Colstrip’s operators accountable — it punishes them. And, as good as retribution may feel, the problem is that it w...

  • My reply to Rob Quist's tax liens

    Updated Mar 28, 2017

Recently, it was discovered that Rob Quist had tax liens filed against him by the state of Montana and it was turned into political fodder. I am not going to condemn Mr. Quist. Like many working Montanan’s not everything has gone as planned in his life. Sometimes no matter how you plan, the world just doesn’t cooperate. Unexpected bills can happen at any time and expected payments usually are farther away than anticipated. Welcome to the real world, folks. This is where most working Montana families live all the time. It als...

  • Quarterback battle underway at Northern

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 28, 2017

Over the past few seasons, the Montana State University-Northern football team has struggled to win games, and part of that has been a lack of comsitency at quarterback. Ever since Aaron Christensen has taken over as head coach for the Lights, Northern has struggled to find production at the position, and it has led to an offense that scored fewer points and gained fewer yards than any other team in the Frontier Conference over the past two seasons. While Northern has boasted...

  • All Pony Blue at Cut Bank tennis invite

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 28, 2017

It’s early. It’s still chilly, and it’s certainly windy. But even with those tough conditions, the Havre High tennis teams got their season off to a very successful start. Last Saturday, the Blue Ponies were in Cut Bank for the annual Cut Bank Invitational, and after placing an 11 combined singles players and doubles teams, head coach George Ferguson was more than excited about what he called, only the beginning. “Just very proud of the kids,” Ferguson said. “For the first com...
