  • Same-sex marriage activists hopeful amid lawsuit

    JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Five couples have sued to overturn the nation's first constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The couples on Monday sued the state of Alaska, which passed the ban in 1998. The plaintiffs are alleging in federal court that the ban is unconstitutional. The Human Rights Campaign says there's only three other states — North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana — that don't have legal challenges pending to same-sex marriage bans.... Full story

  • 2 ex-Rocky Boy workers sue district, superintendent

    Two Rocky Boy school district employees have filed suit against School Superintendent Voyd St. Pierre and the Rocky Boy school district, contending he created a hostile work environment for them. Legal papers filed in District Court April 21 show that former school district employees Wilson Mitchell and Charlotte Big Knife have separately filed actions against St. Pierre.     The second of two defendants charged in the death of an 11-month-old boy in their care pleaded guilty in federal District Court in Great Falls Monday to the lesser of two charges in the indictment, and the judge set her sentencing hearing for Aug. 21. Cecilia Rose Gardipee pleaded guilty to shaking Kaidynce Small for about 90 seconds in the early morning of Oct. 21. He died that morning.   • Alcohol believed to be a factor in fatal crash

    Janika Louise Doney, 19, of Fort Belknap was killed in a motor vehicle accident Saturday. A report from Fort Belknap law enforcement said the vehicle was traveling south on SR 66 at mile marker 30.9, when it entered the west shoulder. The vehicle continued to travel south on the shoulder until it drove through the oncoming approach and became airborne, the report says. “All occupants of the vehicle were ejected,” the release says. “Seatbelts were a factor and alcohol is believed to be a factor.” Doney was a college student...
