    Updated May 19, 2014

POLSON (AP) — A 56-year-old Polson man is charged with trying to hire someone to kill his ex-girlfriend to prevent her from testifying against him at his rape trial. District Judge James Manley on Friday granted a request by Lake County prosecutors to have Dennis Jay Hobbs held on $5 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on charges of solicitation of deliberate homicide, stalking and tampering with a witness. Hobbs was released on bond last year after being charged with two counts of raping and a... Full story

  • Our View: It's time to end the death penalty in Montana

    Updated May 19, 2014
    9

Because of the bedlam over how to best execute condemned prisoners, Montana’s death penalty is on hold. District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock has ordered further hearings on use of phenobarbital as the primary drug used in executions. Montana’s Legislature specified that “ultra-fast acting” drugs be used in executions. That’s getting harder and harder. Many companies are refusing to sell drugs to states for executions, reacting to a change of attitude from the general public about the death penalty. State governments are morbidly... Full story

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 19, 2014

The competition the Havre High softball team ran into over the weekend was stiff. But in the final weekend of the regular season, the Central A Blue Ponies were able to get four more games under their belt, as well as one more win before the post season begins. HHS spent the weekend in Butte, playing four nonconference games in two days at the Butte Central Invite. Friday, the Ponies went 0-2, losing a 7-2 game to Polson, followed by a 6-2 loss to Libby. Saturday the Ponies fared a little bit better on the road by going 1-1,...

  • North Stars split with powerful Reds

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 19, 2014

In recent years, the Glasgow Reds have proven they are one of the best American Legion baseball teams in the state. The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team got the opportunity to match up with the Reds' A and B squads, and saw how talented the Reds' program is first hand. Sunday at Legion Field in Havre, the North Stars hosted Glasgow for a non-conference doubleheader. And coming off of a home split with the Great Falls Electrics earlier in the week, the North Star...

  • HHS boys continue Central A tennis dynasty

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 19, 2014

Central A Division tennis titles are nothing new to the Havre Blue Ponies. But their most recent one was one of dominance. But in recent years, the Ponies have been winning divisional titles by very slim margins. Not this weekend in Bozeman, however. Havre scored 48 points, swept the singles and doubles titles and routed the rest of the field at the 2014 Central A tennis tournament Thursday-Friday in Bozeman. Anaconda was a distant second with 30 points, while Lewistown... Full story

Once upon a time the Havre High girls tennis team was racking up Central A and Class A state trophies at a rapid pace. But the Blue Ponies hadn't carried a trophy home since the Central A Divisional of 2010. On Saturday morning in Bozeman, that all changed. Blue Pony junior Tatiana Ralph scored a dramatic and unusual win in the girls singles consolation match of the 2014 Central A Divisional tournament in Bozeman, and that win gave Havre 47 team points, one better than defendi... Full story

  • Exports help Montana energy producers

    Kirk Bushman|Updated May 19, 2014

Last year America produced 84 percent of the energy we consumed, the highest level since 1987. Our net energy imports — measured in terms of energy content — are at a 26-year low. The speed with which our energy imports have been diminishing is astonishing. According to the Energy Information Administration, our net imports of energy decreased 19 percent from 2012 to 2013. With that fast pace, America is truly on a trajectory to full energy self-sufficiency in the very near future. Part of the decline in energy imports has... Full story

  • Montana bill drafting D.C. style

    Debby Barrett|Updated May 19, 2014

Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of Obamacare. Montanans rejected Obamacare’s individual mandate at the ballot box by a 2-to-1 vote. It is not hard to understand why. Obamacare was crafted behind closed doors by special interest lobbyists — the pharmaceutical industry, the hospital industry and major health insurers. The public was cut out from the process entirely. The consequences were disastrous. Thousands of Montanans had their insurance policies canceled last year, and insurance premiums are skyrocketing. Last wee... Full story

  • Wallet found, Canadian visitor is happy

    Shirley Soutar|Updated May 19, 2014

While traveling through your town on May 8 from Alberta to Ontario, we stopped to shop at your mall. When I went to pay for my purchases, I realized that I didn't have my wallet. After searching through the parking lot and the car and asking at a few stores, I went into Herbergers and asked them if anyone had found a wallet. A very nice sales lady hugged me and told me that her friend (I think her name was Cynthia) had found a wallet in the parking lot and had brought it into the store. Although I offered her money to pass... Full story
