    Tim Leeds|Updated Jun 11, 2013

A forum planned to talk about, and take questions on, the results of program review at Montana State University-Northern has been postponed due to illness. University spokesman Jim Potter said this morning that Chancellor Jim Limbaugh was under the weather, and would not be able to hold the forum, which had been scheduled for 8:30 this morning. Potter said the forum would be rescheduled. The forum was planned to present the results of more than half-a-year of looking at programs, with two councils, the deans and chairs of... Full story

    Daniel Horton|Updated Jun 10, 2013

Sunday afternoon marked the end of the Havre Jamboree at Legion Field, and the North Stars had the opportunity to play the final game of the weekend. But unfortunately for the North Stars, the Glasgow Reds had no intentions of sticking around for a complete game. After going 1-3 through the first two days of the Jamboree, the North Stars faced off against Montana’s No. 1 team in the Reds. The Reds made short work of the outing, defeating the North Stars 15-0 in just three i... Full story

Friday through Sunday, the American Legion North Stars hosted the Havre Jamboree at Legion Field in Havre. The North Stars played a total of four games on the weekend, but were especially busy Friday and Satruday. Friday, Strathmore, Alberta, defeated the North Stars 6-4 in five innings. If your daughter decides she wants to be a high school math teacher, don't bother to send her to Montana State University-Northern because Northern no longer offers the degree. If your son is good at English and history and wants to go to college to study to become a high school teacher, you will have to tell him that he will have to leave Havre because Northern no longer offers the degree. In fact, Chancellor Jim Limbaugh has made the decision to terminate all secondary education degrees at Northern. The chancellor has made... Full story

  • Concern about road chemicals

    Laura Velk|Updated Jun 10, 2013

So, Chouteau County road crews are going to be putting magnesium chloride down in the hills, corners and wherever else they want. I recall a few years back the county did this and it was a terrible mess. The washboards and pot holes turned rock hard after the magnesium chloride was put down. Also, isn't magnesium chloride the stuff that wears on your car's metal? Isn't that the stuff that everyone complains about all over the United States because it rusts out vehicles? Maybe the county will keep a bay open at the shop for... Full story

  • Our View: Tribes, counties should work together to curb DUIs

    Updated Jun 10, 2013

Rocky Boy, Fort Belknap and two other Native American reservations in Montana don’t supply state and county officials with information on drunken-driving arrests made on their reservations. The Associated Press did a story this week that explains how this means that repeat DUI offenders don’t have their records available to state and county officials. For instance, if a person is convicted twice at Rocky Boy for drunken driving, and then gets busted on a state highway, Hill County officials would not know of the prior arr... Full story

The annual Hi-Line Cruz’n Association's Rod Run started Friday night when the car enthusiasts paraded through downtown Havre. Some at Saturday’s show were classic car enthusiasts who were enthralled at the display, while others were just curious. People quickly came to realize that if they wanted good conversation, a few laughs as well as lessons on the classic cars, they nee... Full story

  • Area governments declare disasters

    Tim Leeds|Updated Jun 10, 2013

Governments throughout north-central Montana again are dealing with massive flood damages and could be looking to the state and, potentially, federal government for assistance. The government of Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation, the Hill County Commission, Blaine County Commission and Chouteau County Commission all declared disasters last week after two weeks of rain dropped between what would normally be half — or more — than the total amount of rain that falls in a year. The p... Full story

  • Flooding strikes rural areas south of Havre

    John Kelleher|Updated Jun 10, 2013

While flood waters have receded in parts of Hill County, parts of South Havre are still being plagued by floods. Hill County Road 50, off U.S. Highway 87, was washed out, making it impassable and knocking out about 100 feet of the road. And residents of neighboring Road 70 feared that a bridge there might be washed out. Cari Frahm, who lives on a ranch just east of the washed out area, said Box Elder Creek overflowed onto the road Thursday night. Usually the creek is “just a little trickle of a thing,” she said. But water rus... Full story

  • Rocky Boy, Fort Belknap don't report DUIs

    Matt Volz - Associated Press|Updated Jun 10, 2013

HELENA — Rocky Boy's, Fort Belknap and three other Montana reservations don't report drunken-driving convictions to the state, and county prosecutors say the information void poses a safety risk for both repeat offenders and other drivers. Tribal justice systems generally have jurisdiction over misdemeanor crimes committed by Native Americans on reservations, and a DUI becomes a felony in Montana only upon a person's fourth offense. That means the state has no ability to force tribal courts to share their misdemeanor DUI conv... Full story
