  • View from the North 40: I'm qualified to be the judge of that

    Pam Burke|Updated Mar 22, 2019

I feel like my whole education and employment history has come together today to bring you this column which celebrates liberal arts in the news. To start this list off, we’ll look at the headline I read titled “Punctuation Marks.” Grammar and punctuation are like candy to word nerds. Then I saw that the article was from Architectural Digest and I was all “Ooooooh, I do wish to see the myriad ways high-brow architects incorporated the comma into their buildings. Did they us...

  • DPHHS positions critical to maintaining services

    Updated Mar 22, 2019

At the Department of Public Health and Human Services, we are committed to providing direct services to Montanans that they rely on for their health and livelihoods. That’s why it’s disappointing to see Reps. Matt Regier and Carl Glimm imply in their March 19 editorial, “Republicans are working to trim fat from state agencies,” that vacant DPHHS FTEs must not be necessary. And it’s especially disappointing because the positions that have been left open for over a year are a direct result of managing complex budgetary pressure...

  • Wolverines spank Griz for the second year in a row

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 22, 2019

A year ago, it was frosty second-half shooting against Michigan that did in the Montana Grizzlies in the first round of the NCAA tournament. One year later, it was the first half. In a rematch with the No. 2 seeded Wolverines in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA tournament Thursday night in Des Moines, Iowa, 15th-seeded Montana made just one of its first nine shots and shot just 22 percent in the opening 20 minutes in a 74-55 loss inside the Wells Fargo Arena. • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Mar 22, 2019

You know, Lord, I’ll bet all of us pretty well remember when we were little kids our mama would sneak into our bedroom to check to see if we were asleep, or for sure, to check in on us when we were sick. That’s what parents do, right? Sometimes Ma or Pa would sit near us to pray for us, joining You, Lord, as they knew that You also were watching over us while we slept. An auntie shared that sometimes while in the act of checking on her little ones, she felt like she was bathing herself in the grace and wonder of Your lov...

  • Out Our Way: View from the Tiger

    Updated Mar 22, 2019

Out our way, a common joke was the bumper sticker put out a few years ago for Montana that said, “There’s Nothing Here.” While supporting my ministry in Havre I worked the 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift at Walmart, and it was always fun to hear tourists talking with each other about the state and especially the Hi-Line. Many could hardly wait to get to the Rockies and west of the divide where there was “something to see.” We, who know the area — who have spent time in the Bear Paws, Beaver Creek, and on some of less traveled roads in...

  • Imagining Heaven: Hold onto the good to attain Heaven

    Updated Mar 22, 2019

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. As we press on in our study of Heaven we should remember that Paul said that he desired to depart and be with Christ. That notion is foreign to many of us who say that we would miss our friends and family here on earth. However, if we really understood more of our future with Jesus we would be anxious to join Him after our time on earth concludes. It may be hard for some of us to say that we desire to depart and be with Chr...
