Chippewa Cree Tribal Water Resources Director Dustin White said July 10 that the water situation on the reservation was critical. Water levels within the reservation's water storage tanks had only 4 or 5 feet of water remaining. Unless people took measures to conserve water, the entire reservation would have...

Required inspections also increased to include checks of all...

  • View from the North 40: From the bottomless hole of on-hold

    Pam Burke|Updated Jul 21, 2017

Today I would like to take a departure from my usual frivolous subject matter to touch on the serious topic of people’s worth, specifically, the value of my own life. How much is my life worth? Is it worth, for example, $750? When I was a small child, I was worthless for earning any wages or being productive in any helpful way. I was, as most babies are, a burden. I was not special in this way. Perhaps if I had been a pretty child or one who made people feet compelled to s...

  • Pastor's Corner: A master storyteller tells the story

    Updated Jul 21, 2017

If you’ve ever done much reading in the Gospels — that is, the first four books of the New Testament — you’ve probably noticed Jesus was a master storyteller. Someone would ask him a question and he would reply by telling a story (or a parable, if you will). Why did he do that? We may not know for certain but I suspect there are at least a few reasons. First, almost everyone can understand a story, regardless of one’s age, background or level of education. Isn’t that why children so often plead with their parents, “T...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jul 21, 2017

You know, Lord, sometimes while looking for one thing, another thing pops up that catches our attention. This newly found item, a thank you note to God, surely seemed to be quite appropriate; just sharing with others, Lord. The author is unknown: Dear God, thank you for the obvious, thank you for what we take for granted, thank you for your creation of all things. Thank you for now. Thank you for making me what I am — help me to become what I should be, in you. Thank you for church financial problems — to draw us closer to...

  • Out Our Way: Along the Covenant Trail with Goliath

    Updated Jul 21, 2017

Out our way, the young sometimes have to learn things the hard way. Young Snowball was a frisky colt that ignored aunt Babe's warning about fences. Babe might run full tilt toward the paddock when the hay was being tossed in, but she slowed down and stopped before she hit the barbed wire. I don't recall seeing cuts and scars on her, so she must have learned from her elders about fences. But poor Snowball, like many other reckless youths, ignored her example, disdained her...

The Lethbridge Miners instead made it seem like Havre was home. The loss sends Havre...

  • Great rides, great times at the Great Northern Rodeo

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 21, 2017

The Great Northern Ram Open Rodeo has been a two-day event in recent years, but this year, the rodeo fit everything into one day. Yet, even though all the action was packed into one night, there was absolutely no dip in the excitement level. With great purses and in some events, the chance to enter twice, the Great Northern Ram Open Rodeo attracted high-caliber cowboys and cowgirls from across Montana to take part in the annual rodeo inside the arena at the Great Northern...
