  • Looking Out My Backdoor: Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend

    Updated Aug 25, 2016

Groucho Marx said it. I suppose there are as many book readers in Mexico as in any other country. What I know for sure, no supposition, true fact, is there are more dogs than people. I’ve wondered if dog ownership is a residency requirement. Even here in Colonia El Guaje, also known as Rancho Americano, everyone has a dog or two or even six. Oops — no — I’m wrong. Lani has cats. Lani has three large male cats. Three male cats equal one male dog. All the dogs are male. I’ve no idea how they reproduce. Maybe a company g...

  • Letter to the Editor: Bullock supports public schools

    Updated Aug 25, 2016

Editor, As a retired teacher, I am deeply offended by the misinformation being mailed to Montanans by the out-of-state group Americans for Prosperity. The mailer claims Gov. Steve Bullock turned his back on special needs children by vetoing HB 322. HB 322 was a terrible bill. I’m glad Gov. Bullock vetoed it. HB 322 would have pulled millions of dollars out of Montana’s public schools for the benefit of private schools. It applied not just to children with special needs, but to their siblings and children of military parents a...

    Updated Aug 25, 2016

Editor, On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Square Committee we would like to thank all the bands that made this summer’s Sounds on the Square a huge success. The time the 10 bands dedicated to each Wednesday evening in the months of June, July and August shows their commitment to the Sounds on the Square and to the community. As with so many activities that take place in Havre, Sounds on the Square wouldn’t happen without the volunteer help and the financial generosity of those believing in keeping Havre a gre...

  • HHS 2016: A lot of new in Blue Pony Football

    Chris Peterson|Updated Aug 25, 2016

No two high school football seasons are ever the same. And when it comes to the Havre High football team, that will be very apparent as HHS takes the field against Whitefish this Saturday. Not only will the Blue Ponies have a new head coach after the departure of Mark Samson to Great Falls High, and the hiring of Ryan Gatch, formerly the head coach at Forsyth, Havre will also be without numerous key players from last year's team, including All-State quarterback Dane Warp and...

When she took over the Havre High volleyball program, head coach Tamecia Jarvis had a plan to build the Blue Ponies back into a Class A powerhouse. For Jarvis and the Ponies, success came quickly and Havre returned to the Class A state tournament for the first time in nearly a decade a season ago. But now, with some key players gone to graduation, Jarvis and the program will be put to the test. HHS, which went 14-10 a year ago, lost a lot from last year’s squad, including D...

  • MSU-N Back to School 2016: Kegel looks back, looks ahead at Northern

    Alex Ross|Updated Aug 18, 2016

As Greg Kegel begins his second year at the helm of Montana State University-Northern as chancellor, the campus is seeing a frenzy of activity. Perhaps the most notable is the construction work being done. "We are across campus doing a lot of upgrades and renovation-type projects," Kegel said. He said that on the southeast corner of the campus, walls are being taken out in the Metals Technology Building and breakout rooms constructed for the welding faculty. In the Farm...
