  • Looking out my Backdoor: It's a 'fur' piece

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Aug 31, 2017

From there to here. I’m not sure what sparked my curiosity, but from Havre in Montana to Etzatlan in Jalisco, Mexico, the distance is 2449.9 miles. That mileage does not take into consideration any deviation from the route: no searching for a better hotel or non-franchise-plastic-food eatery, no side-trips to see friends or relatives close to the route. Imagine a human automaton, hands glued to the steering wheel, eyes on the road, single-mindedly moving forward, only f...

From Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks As hunters and other recreationists enjoy late summer in Montana, fire safety will be a critical part of a safe trip. Montana is parched. Some parts of the state have seen little rain all summer long. More than 40 active wildfires are currently listed on federal incident management website for the state of Montana. Many other, smaller fires, are being managed on a local level. And still the dry weather, heat and smoke persist. Being knowledgeable about current restrictions and fire safe...

  • 2017 Cat-Griz Preview: United Griz seek a return to glory

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 31, 2017

The Montana Grizzlies don't miss the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs very often. Even more rare is a finish in the bottom half of the Big Sky Conference standings. And yet, that's exactly where the Griz ended up in 2016, going 3-5 in Big Sky play, 6-5 overall, and missing the playoffs for just the third time in over two decades. And the culprit was four losses in their last five games, including a heartbreaking home loss to Montana State in the Brawl of the Wild in...

  • 2017 MSU-N Football Preview: New Season, New Attitude

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 31, 2017

When the Montana State University-Northern Lights beat the Carroll College Fighting Saints last September inside Blue Pony Stadium, it must have felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off Northern's shoulders. It can feel that way when you haven't won a football game in a while. And while that was a joyous day for sure, and one that will be a big part of Northern's history for many years to come, it was just one victory in a 10-game season, and the only one the...
