    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 15, 2013

Montana State University-Northern students and fans — and music lovers — have a chance to watch two homecomings during Havre Festival Days this year. The day before the Lights football team plays its homecoming game against Dickinson State University, former Lights basketball player Clinton Shelton is performing a homecoming hip-hop concert Sept. 20. “We’re planning a big event,” Shelton said, adding that he hopes to play some of his jams at the show and “bring a breath of f...

  • Skylights get their revenge on Carroll

    Updated Sep 13, 2013

The Montana State University-Northern volleyball team had waited 10 months to face the Carroll College Fighting Saints after Carrol beat Northern in the fifth set of the 2012 Frontier Conference championship match. It turned out the wait was worth it. On Friday night at the Armory Gymnasium, Northern dominated the Saints by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-13, marking the second straight season MSU-N has beaten Carroll to start league play in Havre. Senior Abby Nicholas paced MSU-N with 16 kills, 14 digs and four blocks....

  • Bullock to let Beach commutation process play out

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press|Updated Sep 13, 2013

HELENA (AP) — Gov. Steve Bullock said Friday it would be inappropriate for him to offer an opinion on Barry Beach's request to be set free before the process plays out. Beach's attorney sent an application for commutation, or a reduction of sentence, to members of the state Board of Pardons and Parole on Wednesday. Beach has served nearly 30 years of a 100-year sentence after being convicted in 1983 of the 1979 murder of Kimberly Nees in Poplar. Beach was released in 2011 for 18 months after a Lewistown judge ruled there was...

  • Judge affirms newlywed's release in murder case

    Updated Sep 13, 2013

MISSOULA (AP) — A U.S. District judge has upheld the release of a Montana newlywed accused of killing her husband by pushing him off a cliff at Glacier National Park. The Missoulian reports that Judge Donald Molloy determined Friday that 22-year-old Jordan Linn Graham does not pose a flight risk. Molloy said during a brief hearing that restrictions placed on Graham's release address concerns that she poses a risk to the community or herself. Authorities say Graham has admitted to shoving Cody Lee Johnson, 25, off a cliff i...

  • Game Day feature: He always wanted to be a Light

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 13, 2013

Growing up in Havre, and spending many days and nights inside Blue Pony Stadium, Jordan Van Voast knew he wanted to play defense for the Lights. In fact, it was all he really wanted to do. But only little did Van Voast know, just a year removed from a stellar career for the Havre Blue Ponies, that his dream of playing linebacker would happen a lot sooner than he ever thought. After a career with the Blue Ponies, which started just one year after Havre High’s magical 2004 s...

  • Second 'Night on the Town' set for Festival Days

    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 13, 2013

A group that supports the community is inviting people out for “A Night on the Town,” the second fundraiser the Hill County Community Foundation is holding during Havre Festival Days. Lori Evans of the foundation said people seemed to have fun last year with the program, traveling from business to business with refreshments served while watching actors perform in vignettes celebrating Hill County’s 100th anniversary, written by local playwright Martin Holt. “This year, we’re p...

  • Pony golfers host Havre Invite Saturday at BCGC

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 13, 2013

The weather might be perfect this time of year, but already the high school golf season is starting to wind down, and it’s a very busy time for the Havre Blue Ponies. Today marks the first of four tournaments for the Ponies in an eight-day span, and this weekend in general is a big one for Havre. The Ponies are in Lewistown today for the Lewistown Invitational, and HHS will return home to host the Havre Invitational Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course. Today’s meet in Lew...

  • Hi-Line Living: Havre youth soccer

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Sep 13, 2013

The Havre Youth Soccer Association gives children a chance to get outside and play soccer for fun. Youth Soccer is broken up into four categories, based on grade levels: Kindergarten to first grade, second to third grade, fourth to fifth grade and sixth to eighth grade. Pam Olson, a coach and director for the association, said there are roughly 16 to 20 teams in the K-1 category, 12 in the second-third category, six in the fourth-fifth category and four in the middle school...

  • Courthouse lawn: Pieces of fascinating history

    Toni Hagener|Updated Sep 13, 2013

The lawn on the west side of the Hill County Courthouse is always an attractive shaded area. In early spring the sidewalk into the west entrance is decorated with big colorful peonies. An assortment of other flowers and plants grace the area along those same walks later in the season. When Veterans ceremonies are held there, the walks are lined with American flags. That same area of the lawn has been the site of other special events including weddings and pie socials. It also...

  • Havre of the Past: A new barber shop, the Silver Panic and drought

    Emily Mayer|Updated Sep 13, 2013

This week, for the 36th installment of this series celebrating Havre’s 120th anniversary, we return to 1893. It is too bad the previous two week’s issues were not on microfilm, as I would have liked to see the newspaper’s reaction to Havre’s incorporation on Sept. 5 of that year. We start up again with the Sept. 12 edition. Due to the Silver Panic of 1893, there were a few articles on that subject throughout the paper. Here is one on Montana’s outlook of the situation...

  • Friday Night Lights: Bears Rising

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 13, 2013
    1

If last weekend was any kind of preview into the future of the Northern C Six-Man football season, final standings at the end of the season may be flipped upside down compared to recent years. For a while now, the Big Sandy Pioneers have been a powerhouse in Six-Man football. That fact was highlighted by a trip to the state championship game last year. And on the flipside, and just a 10 mile trip down the road, the Box Elder Bears are relatively new to the 6-Man scene and...

  • Bobcats return home, Griz head to North Dakota

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 13, 2013

It's been a strange and difficult last seven days for the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies. And though both teams have important games Saturday, they're important for different reasons. The No. 3 Bobcats (1-1) host NCAA Division II Colorado-Mesa Saturday in Bozeman. Normally, that's not cause for concern but the Cats will be without senior quarterback DeNarius McGhee for the first time in 40 games. In a last-second loss at FBS power SMU last Saturday night, McGhee...

  • Havre High runners ready to race in Malta

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 13, 2013

Moving into the second weekend of competition, the Havre High cross country teams should see solid improvements on both the boys and girls squads, especially now that the Blue Ponies are competing at full strength. Last week, the Central A Ponies opened the season running at the Cut Bank Time Trials. Team scores were not kept, but the HHS runners turned in a lot of good times. But more importantly, the Ponies discovered who the seven varsity runners were going to be for both...

  • Blue Ponies gallop into Sidney tonight

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 13, 2013

If anybody should be excited about getting back on the football field, it’s the Havre High football team. In athletics, it is hard to think of anything worse than ending in a tie. Nobody likes a loss for obvious reasons, but ending a nonconference rivalry game at 6-6 after basically just one half of play is maybe just as bad. That is the situation the Central A Blue Ponies found themselves in in their home opener last Friday night, as the Ponies tied the Miles City Cowboys 6...

  • Battle-tested Lights come home

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 13, 2013

Training camp started over a month ago, and when it ended, the Montana State University-Northern football team had to head out on the road, playing its first two games of the 2013 Frontier Conference season away from Blue Pony Stadium. With a positive 1-1 start to the year, the Lights are ready to make their long-awaited home debut, and they’ll do it against a team which has had their number in recent games. Saturday, the Lights host the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers in a F...

  • The rematch is finally here

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 13, 2013

Exactly a year ago to the day, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team used a stunning win over then nationally-ranked Carroll College to begin what would become one of the most memorable volleyball seasons in Northern history. Though a lot has changed for the Skylights since that season-opening win over the Fighting Saints last September inside a then unfinished Armory Gymnasium, things also remain the same. Northern, which is no longer a team on the rise, but...

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels, September 13

    Updated Sep 13, 2013

Laurel — The Havre High Booster Club has shelled out a good chunk of cash for a new Blue Pony mascot, replacing one worn out by years of use. The new Pony is a great representative of the school and its spirit. Thanks to the Boosters. Laurel — Margaret Hencz usually does the judging in her capacity as Havre City judge. Last week, the Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club did the judging and named Hencz’s lawn and gardens the Yard of the Week. It’s quite a yard and has attracted lots of good birds this year. She keep track. Congratula...

  • No rest for the weary or negligent

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 13, 2013

If you torture a house long enough, it will quit you. It will fall apart in little ways, and big. It will cost you money, sweat and just a little bit of blood. But it won’t all be bad. I had always considered our approach to home maintenance a practical matter: We paid $1,000 dollars for the trailer house when it was new-only-to-us, so we’ve never felt it was a good investment to sink a bunch of money and labor into it. ... beyond what we spent to replace the 6-foot squ...

  • Daniel puts on one-woman show with 'Bad Dates'

    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 13, 2013

The local acting troupe is presenting an extra show this season, with tonight scheduled as the first show of a one-woman, light-hearted comedy about getting back into the dating scene, business — and crime. Montana Actors’ Theatre veteran Andi Daniel stars in “Bad Dates” by Theresa Rebeck, with Jay Pyette the lead director and directing assistance from Bethany Mason, Audrey Barger, Kristiny Lorett and Jessa Pyette. Jay Pyette said MAT usually doesn’t produce a play in Septem...
