In 2010, Cassini saw a...

  • View from the North 40: And on the 319th day ...

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 15, 2017

Break out the second layer of clothes, dust off the galoshes, turn up the thermostat and take out the parka, we finally got rain, a cold first-of-the-fall dribbling soaker. I couldn’t be happier unless it was snow. I thought I’d go a lifetime without ever longing for early winter snow. And honestly, if I go the rest of my life without having cause to be hopeful about the possibility of snow again, or even quite this happy about a cold fall rain, I’ll be grateful. National Weat...

Havre's oldest park, Simon Pepin Memorial Park, has existed for more than a century, since 1912. Pepin Park is arguably also the most-used park. Just in the last three months, Pepin has hosted "Politics in the Park," Bear Paw Credit Union for Kids Day, Montana Federation of...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

You know, Lord, a playground scene was observed by Gloria Guggino. In 1978 she wrote about it, entitled it: “Playground Charade.” Her abridged viewpoint follows: “The scene before me was a treat to behold. A group of children romped in a playground. Memories were awakened — days of carefree play, long gone from reality but not from memory. Swings were a favorite pastime, looks like they still are. So was baseball. Yes, there was a youngster running his legs off to make a home run. “However, something strange disturbed my reve...

  • Finishing well: Seek God and help others do the same while finishing

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. As a baby boomer, I am spending quite a bit of time thinking about aging and helping those who are aging. When I was younger, I thought that 40 was old. Now that I am in my middle 50s I can see that the next 30 years will go faster than the last 30. Psalm 90:10 tells us that the years of our life are 70, or even by reason of strength 80; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. We do not know when...

  • Out Our Way: Along the Covenant Trail with Goliath

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

Out our way, we have to deal with the realities of change. We have to adjust. Just now with the fires on Rocky Boy and the closing of some prime grazing land in the Beaver Creek Park, a lot of folks are making adjustments. Goliath tells me the reason we have so many casinos up our way is because nearly everybody is a gambler. Every farmer and every rancher knows there are no guarantees and every year there is a gamble. Too much water - not enough - none? Disease in the herd,...

This is the first assignment for the 28-year-old pastor, who came, with family - wife and two young boys - in tow straight from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Havre. Although no stranger to Montana, the native Idahoan said he'd never been this far north until driving into Havre after having committ...

  • George Ferguson Column: Overreact: We don't know who the Cats and Griz really are just yet

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

The Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats have each played two games so far in 2017. But, what do we really know about either team? That depends on who you talk to, or listen to. Take the fan bases for example. So far, if you read social media and message board fodder, nothing the Grizzlies have done have made a subset of social media Griz fans happy. Montana beat non-scholarship, but still FCS Valparaiso handily to open the season, but, because the Crusaders scored...

  • Blue Ponies look to spike the Cowgirls

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

For the Havre High volleyball team, the start to the season has been a bit of a whirlwind, but Saturday, the schedule becomes more regular, beginning with a non-conference match in Conrad. Throughout the first month of the season, the Blue Ponies have played just two regulation matches, against Belgrade and Livingston. Outside of those, every match has been part of a tournament, meaning each match is just a set or two. Yet, starting with the Cowgirls Saturday at 5 p.m., HHS...

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

The Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is ultra-excited to finally be playing at home, when the Skylights take on the UM-Western Bulldogs Saturday afternoon. But before Northern got home, the Skylights had to endure a rough night in Billings. Rocky, which is picked to...

  • Lights ready to march into Helena

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

The first two games of the Montana State University-Northern Lights' 2017 season have been a roller coaster ride. So in game three, the Lights are looking to put together a consistent four quarters. Northern (0-2, 0-2) opened the season with a heartbreaking, last-minute loss at Rocky Mountain College Sept. 2 - a game in which the Lights had the lead twice in the final four minutes. Then, last Saturday, MSU-N felt the wrath of the Montana Tech offense in a 70-27 loss inside...

  • Ponies hoping it clicks in Belgrade

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

Although it might seem hard to find many positives after an 0-3 start, the Havre High football team feels like it still has a lot to play for and that all the Blue Ponies need is one win to get things rolling. Tonight in Belgrade, the Blue Ponies will have another shot at getting that win. Havre (0-3) will take on the Panthers (1-2) tonight at 7 in a game that could keep hope alive for HHS or end its playoff fight entirely. "Right now, I am really pleased with the kids," HHS...

  • Friday Night Lights: TRIPLE KNIGHTS

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 15, 2017

It's not unusual in small towns for brothers to play on the same team or for the same school, but triplets - that's an entirely different story, one the Miller brothers, Devon, Dylan and Dane have been living for since the day they were born. The Millers, who will be part of the first class to graduate from North Star High School this spring after attending K-12, have been a mainstay in North Star athletics the past few years. Devon and Dylan have both starred on the football...
