    After several months of no league bowling, Hi-Line Lanes welcomed back bowlers in all leagues. Scores did not show that they took any time off, as the scores were as hot as the 90-degree weather. Roman Surber just missed another 300 with a 297, (his third try for the magic 300 in one year). Some keglers don’t get three chances in a lifetime.     Kirk Fitch’s time as Havre police chief was short, but its impact was great. Fitch announced Monday he was retiring at the end of the month after spending a little less than two years in office. When he assumed office, the police department was at a low ebb. Morale was low, and there was a revolving door of officers in and out of the department. There was apprehension by the public.     The goal for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is to take care of business at home. But opening up with rival, and NAIA power Carroll College doesn’t make that goal easy.     Kaylie Gilman is a former Havre High Blue Pony. She was on the verge of being a Pony standout on the basketball court, volleyball court, and on the track in Havre, but wound up being a standout for the Big Sandy Pioneers instead. Gilman attended Havre High her freshman and sophomore years, but transferred to Big Sandy where’s she found a home with the Pioneers.     The ranching community lost a well- known, loved and admired rancher on Sept. 15, 2013. Jim Pursley died due to a ranching accident on his ranch north of Chinook doing what he loved most. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Chinook.     The Great Northern Fair Board was urged at its monthly meeting Tuesday to look at some new ideas for events and ways to adjust management at the county fairgrounds to try to raise its revenue.   • Northern to receive over $1.7 million from grant

    Montana State University-Northern will receive a $1.7 million grant to help training people for full-time jobs. The Northern grant is part of a $25 million grant given to colleges around the state.
