The highlight of the festival, the parade, went swimmingly down 5th Avenue Saturday. The streets were lined with on-lookers for the floats from many organization, clubs, businesses and community members. The favorites of the judges were Northern Montana Hospital for best commercial float, First Lut...

  • Idiots: me and the widget I rode in on

    Pam Burke|Updated Sep 27, 2013

Any economist or sociologist can tell you that the price of all goods and services are based on actual worth and perceived value which is the sum total of both market value and personal value — none of these numbers are the same, and any two-bit salesman can tell you that. For example, consider the humble widget, that symbolic product used in teaching business and economics. It's the equivalent of the X of 2X+3=7; or the N of going to the nth degree; or the snipe of “Hey, gre...

  • Tester: Obamacare debate happened five years ago

    Tim Leeds|Updated Sep 27, 2013

With the U.S. Congress playing a “game of chicken” over cutting out the funding for the health care reform act, U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont, said the lawmakers now should be looking at ways to improve what he called a good bill, instead of taking more than 40 votes to repeal or defund it. The U.S. Senate is expected this afternoon to pass a bill to keep government running after next Tuesday that strips away a House of Representatives requirement to defund Obamacare, the health care reform act Congress approved in 2010. Tes...

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., accurately predicting what would happen in the hours following his press conference Thursday, said he is hopeful Congress will work out a deal to keep the government running, but an even bigger showdown with bigger implications is coming next month. Tester said Thursday afternoon he thought the Senate would be able to pass a resolution to keep government running through November, past the Oct. 2 deadline that would shut much of the government down without congressional action. The Senate expected thi...

But now, the Blue Ponies’ season gets a little more exciting, a little more intense and a little more pressure-packed. And it all happens on a golf course the Ponies know well. • Lights look to stay hot at red-hot Western

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 27, 2013

When the 2013 Frontier Conference Football Preseason Poll was released in August, little was expected of the Montana State University-Northern Lights and the UM-Western Bulldogs. The Lights were tabbed to finish fifth this season while the Bulldogs were predicted to finish seventh. But heading into Saturday’s showdown in Dillon, both the Lights and Bulldogs have already proven just how wrong that poll can be. Northern (3-1, 3-1) will meet up with No. 15 Western (3-0, 3-0) S...

The Eagles swept the Ponies in three games by scores of 25-11, 25-23, and 25-11. In games one and three, the P...

  • Friday Night Lights: Redemption Night

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 27, 2013

Tonight’s Homecoming game between the Havre Blue Ponies and conference rival Livingston Rangers is appealing for several reasons. The last time the Ponies and Rangers met was at the end of the 2012 season. It was the final conference game for the Ponies, and the result determined the road the Ponies took in the Class A state playoffs. The end result was a 64-32 loss for the Ponies in Livingston, a 2-2 conference record, and a No. 3 seed heading into the postseason. But it was...

  • Ponies ready for payback against Rangers

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 27, 2013

Homecoming is typically marked on everybody’s schedule, but tonight’s Central A matchup is a game that would have been marked on the Havre High football calendar, homecoming or not. Tonight at 7, the Blue Ponies (1-2-1) will host the conference rival Livingston Rangers (0-4) at Blue Pony Stadium in Havre. Homecoming adds a lot of extra excitement to tonight’s game, but so does the thought of revenge. Last year, in the regular season finale, the Rangers defeated the Ponies 62-4...

  • Skylights roar back at home

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 27, 2013

However, beating the UM-Western Bulldogs turned out to be anything but. On Thursday night, in front of a large crowd at the Armory Gymnasium, the Skylights had to come back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the scrappy Bulldogs in four sets and improve to 4-0 in league play. Northern knocked off Western by scores...
