  • Game Day Notebook: Lights left to wonder what might have been

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

In the first half of Saturday’s battle with nationally-ranked Southern Oregon, it looked like a Montana State University-Northern upset was certainly brewing. Like the rain storms hanging around Blue Pony Stadium early in the game between the Lights and Raiders, an upset was certainly a real possibility. And while the rains did indeed come, the upset didn’t. The No. 7 Raiders, behind the confident arm of senior quarterback Austin Dodge and a talented and deep group of rec... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: It's only a matter of time before the Lights break through

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

Southern Oregon head coach Craig Howard said it, Montana State University-Northern safety Hunter Chandler said it too following the Lights’ 45-24 loss to the nationally-ranked Raiders Saturday at chilly, rainy Blue Pony Stadium. And I know it, and I hope the rest of the Lights, and their fans know it too. What I know, what Howard knows first-hand and what Chandler knows shouldn’t be a secret. But the fact is, the Lights are a hell of a lot better than their record ind... Full story

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

When the Glacier Nationals North American Tier 3 Hockey team takes the ice, they want to win. But the main goal of the club is still about player development. And while the Nationals did not get a win this weekend, they certainly took another step forward in terms of overall development. After losing to both Helena and Great Falls to begin the season, the Nationals went on the road this past weekend for back-to-back games Friday and Saturday nights against the Gillette Wild...

    Updated Sep 29, 2014

MISSOULA (AP) — A blocked punt on the first series of the game was just what Montana needed to get rolling Saturday as the Grizzlies downed Northern Colorado, 38-13, in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams. "A big part of our fast start was the blocked punt," said Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson. "That got us going and got us into a rhythm." Johnson connected with Jamaal Jones on a 9-yard scoring pass two plays after Addison Owen's blocked punt and No. 7 Montana, (3...

  • Ponies rip Rangers

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

Things did not always go according to the plan for the Havre High football team in its Central A conference opener against Livingston. But in the end, despite a great effort, the Rangers simply couldn’t hang with the Blue Ponies. On homecoming night in Livingston on Friday, HHS rallied from an early 20-6 deficit and defeated Livingston 52-27. With the win, the Ponies are now 2-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Rangers fall to 0-5 overall, 0-1 in c...

  • Pony girls take second at Central A golf meet

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

Golf can be an unpredictable sport. High school golf can be even more so. And unpredictable things happened to the Havre High golf teams at this past weekend’s Central A Divisional tournament. Going in to Saturday’s 18-hole tournament at Cottonwood Hills Golf Club in Bozeman, many would have predicted a top-two finish or even a Central A title for the Havre High boys team. On the flip side, with only one golfer who had ever played at a divisional tournament before, exp...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

It was another tough weekend for the Havre High volleyball team as the Blue Ponies dropped a pair of matches against two of the top volleyball programs the state of Montana has to offer. First, the Ponies hosted Central A rival Lewistown at the HHS gymnasium and despite losing in three consecutive games by the scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-17, the match was closer than it appeared. "We had times where we played as well as we have all season," HHS head coach Melanie Skoyen... Full story

  • Raided at home: Raiders 45, Lights 24

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 29, 2014

There isn't a team in the Frontier Conference that has been able to slow down the Southern Oregon University offense this season. And while the Montana State University-Northern Lights tried as hard as they could, even on Homecoming, they couldn't quite do it either. The No. 7 Raiders came into a chilly, windy and rainy Blue Pony Stadium, and overcame a valiant effort by the Lights, turning what was a first-half dogfight, into a second-half runaway, and a final score of 45-24... Full story
