  • Beaver trapping in the park

    Tim Leeds|Updated Oct 16, 2013
    1

Two groups are going head to head on a ballot initiative that would ban private trapping on public land in Montana. A representative of one group has told the Hill County Park Board that the proposal to stop trapping could have serious repercussions on Beaver Creek Park. “The reason I’m coming here is to let the … park board know that something is coming down the pike, and it’s going to affect Beaver Creek Park,” said Fran Buell of Gildford. She told the park board she has t...

  • Election Board to appeal decision on St. Marks

The Chippewa Cree tribe's Election Board will appeal a judge's decision that would have cleared the way for Ken Blatt St. Marks to be sworn in as tribal council chair. The appeal could delay St. Marks' swearing in for several months as attorneys for both sides prepare their cases and submit briefs. Judge Dawn Bitz Running Wolf ruled that the board acted improperly in ordering a new election. In the July 30 vote, St. Marks was the top voter-getter in a five-way race. But the Election Board later ruled that it has let 12...

  • Northern works on nursing program problem

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Oct 14, 2013

The nursing department at Montana State University-Northern is stretched thin, but may be seeing a lessening of its heavy workloads soon depending on the chancellor and council’s decision. Chancellor Jim Limbaugh has asked the nursing faculty to put together a staffing plan to find out what the next step is in maintaining the integrity of the nursing program. “We will address this situation as educators to decide how to move forward,” Limbaugh said. He added that he needed to know what courses needed teaching, what speci...

  • Our View: Food bank, soup kitchen need our help

    Updated Oct 14, 2013

In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in the number of high-profile donations to the Havre Food Bank. This is good news. The number of people who use the food bank’s services is increasing. The same is true with Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen. In coming weeks, food stamp allocations from President Obama’s Stimulus program will come to an end. That means some people will no longer be eligible for food stamps and others will be entitled to less in food stamp assistance. That means, to be certain, more people will go to pri...

  • Reservations deserve better leaders

    Leonard LaMere|Updated Oct 14, 2013

In response to an article in the paper, this is my opinion. I think the ongoing corruption of different tribes is an outrage. The Rocky Boy tribe is in a mess because the council wants to go against the will of the people. They need good, honest people to run these reservations. The councils on the corrupt places have too much power. They act like dictators rather than responsible members of a tribal council that needs to listen to the people. Leonard LaMere Rocky Boy...

  • The Comeback

Sometimes one game can define a football team’s season. And once the 2013 season comes to an end, the Havre High football team may very well be able to look back and say that game was the Blue Ponies’ home finale. Friday night the Central A Blue Ponies hosted the conference rival Lewistown Golden Eagles at Blue Pony stadium in Havre. And in what can best be described as a nail biter, the Ponies found a way to come back from a 21-7 fourth-quarter deficit and earn a very dra...

  • Lights bring down the Thunder

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 14, 2013

It took 10 minutes or so, but once the Montana State University-Northern men’s basketball team found a little rhythm, the Lights were off and running. Northern opened its 2013-14 season with a 59-37 victory over Concordia University of Alberta Sunday afternoon at the Armory Gymnasium. And though veteran head coach Shawn Huse saw plenty of room for improvement, he was excited about his team’s season-opening, albeit very early win. “Our execution wasn’t great,” Huse said. “Bu...

  • Cowgirls edge Blue Ponies

    Updated Oct 14, 2013

After defeating Conrad in five tough set at home last week, the Havre High volleyball team knew that the Class B Cowgirls would be even tougher this weekend in Conrad. And the Central A Ponies saw firsthand just how tough the Cowgirls were on Saturday. Playing one match in Conrad, the Cowgirls defeated the visiting Ponies in four sets. Conrad earned the nonconference win by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-18. The loss won’t hurt the Ponies in the Central A race, but it d...

  • Good protection helped bring HHS back

    Daniel Horton|Updated Oct 14, 2013

If there was any doubt that the Havre High offense still housed the capability to explode at any time, the Blue Ponies put that doubt to rest Friday night under the lights of Blue Pony Stadium. The No. 2 Central A Ponies hosted the winless conference rival Lewistown Golden Eagles Friday in Havre. And for the first three quarters of action, the Ponies had local fans worried about an upset. The Ponies scored on the opening drive of the game, a two-yard pass from Dane Warp to Tho...
