  • Legion should use technology to look for young members

    John Kelleher|Updated Oct 16, 2013

Faced with aging members and a declining membership, the American Legion will have to “grow younger,” in coming years. That was the advice Saturday from Roger Hancock, vice commander of the American Legion in Montana. Hancock spoke to the American Legion District 2 annual meeting at the Havre Senior Center. District 2 includes most of the H-Line. That might mean communicating by Facebook and email instead of letters. And it might mean holding meetings over Skype instead of at the Legion hall, he told the meeting att...

In 1929, the college that is now Montana State University-Northern was growing. Eighty-one students were enrolled. Classes were held in Havre High School and the library was in the First Presbyterian Church basement. Crowded, the college rebuilt the old city of Havre Park Pumping Station for classrooms and administration headquarters. The groundskeeper had an apartment in the basement. They renamed the structure East Hall — it was on the east side of the campus. The college g...

  • Local committee offers to take rodeo again

    Tim Leeds|Updated Oct 16, 2013

The Great Northern Rodeo Committee may put on the rodeo at the Great Northern Fair next year after all. In July, the committee said it was done putting on the rodeo, but committee member Clint Solomon said Tuesday that the group now was willing to continue, with some conditions. The Great Northern Fair Board approved offering them the contract subject to negotiating details. “If we get Friday, Saturday and we get the grounds fixed up to standards and that back fence, that lot, taken care of … and Friday, Saturday, we get the...

The Hill County coroner has released the name of the Havre man who died in an early morning crash just east of Havre Tuesday. Michael John Lowe, 29, was driving an Isuzu Rodeo westbound on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway access road north of U.S. Highway 2, the Montana Highway Patrol crash report says. The vehicle drifted off of the access road at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, when it hit an access road and rolled. Lowe, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not ejected from the vehicle, but died at the scene from injuries sustained...

  • Rocky Boy declares financial disaster due to gov't shutdown

    Staff and wire report|Updated Oct 16, 2013
    14

While the possibility of the federal government reopening inched closer this morning, the Chippewa Cree Tribe at Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation has prepared for the worse this week. The tribal government declared a financial disaster Tuesday due to the federal government shutdown, warning that nearly all tribal offices will be closed and almost all programs halted if the budget stalemate in Congress isn't resolved by Thursday. The central Montana tribe already has cut back hours, furloughed staff and limited services after f...

  • Upset over park closures

    L.W. Park|Updated Oct 16, 2013

What justification is the Obama administration using to close off the public lands to the public? Does it deem its presence necessary for the public to use their own lands, and if so, on what basis? I refer specifically to the closure of national wildlife refuges and the World War II Memorial, but the closure of the national parks is also questionable. Is this just a cynical ploy in hopes that the American public will demand that the GOP cave to Obama and the Democrats? Interestingly, an article in the paper shortly after...

  • Stop arguing, start working

    Don Mahlum|Updated Oct 16, 2013

The shutdown of our government over all of the U.S.A. is in its 15th day as I write this. As a result, many locations have been closed. The most damaging has been the lack of payment of $100,000 each family was supposed to receive after a loved one is killed in the war. Many, many federal parks, memorials, forests, canyons and other sites have been made "off limits" to the general public. This didn't have to take place. Congress decided to, among other "off work days," take the whole month of August off and go home for a...

  • Nursing students want to follow in footsteps of predecessors

    Matthew Shull|Updated Oct 16, 2013

Due to the recent press covering the events occurring within Montana State University-Northern's nursing program, I feel that it is vital to clarify the opinions of students who are being portrayed. Many students, including myself, are finding the course material difficult, but we are adjusting and confident that we will pass the courses. It is not fair to only hold the staff accountable for any student failures or to blame it on the coursework. This program is very difficult, but it is so due to the fact that we will be hold...

  • Our View: Jergeson vs. Hansen will be an exciting race

    Updated Oct 16, 2013

The Hi-Line will be in for a great race for the Montana State Senate next year. As has been expected, State Rep. Kris Hansen, a four-year veteran of the Legislature, will take on Sen. Greg Jergeson, D-Havre, who has spent most of his career in public service. Their newly created 17th district includes much of Hill County, and part or all of Chouteau, Liberty and Cascade counties. The race will pit two candidates who are well respected in their caucuses. The contest will receive attention far beyond the Hi-Line. If Democrats...

  • Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Cooper Spicher, North Star Football

    Daniel Horton|Updated Oct 16, 2013

Cooper Spicher's big senior season has helped the Knights bounce back After a rough stretch that spans at least three seasons, the North Star Knights’ football program has finally bounced back. The Six-Man Knights finished the season with a 3-5 record a year ago, but have already turned in a 5-1 record this fall. The Knights have also clinched a spot in the Class C playoffs already, but are now in the hunt for a conference title and a top seed heading into the posseason. A...

  • George Ferguson Column: Flawed NAIA rankings short-changing MSU-N

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 16, 2013

In matches that really matter, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is perfect. Yes, through eight matches against Frontier Conference competition, no one in the league has been able to knock off the Skylights. In a league noted for depth and talent, that should be enough to raise some eyebrows across the NAIA landscape, but so far, the respect the Skylights have been getting nationally is minimal. And that’s a shame because it’s become quite clear, Nor...
