  • Hi-Line Living: Dale Shulund: Sketching for a living

    Paul Dragu|Updated Oct 21, 2017

It took less than 10 years of persistent drawing for Havre pencil sketch artist Dale Shulund's artwork to find its way in the nation's capital. Shulund, who said he began seriously drawing and framing his sketches in 2009 after his wife, Marlene, insisted on it, recently caught a big break when Sen. Steve Daines borrowed one of his pieces, "Montana Memories," to hang in his Washington, D.C. office. The drawing depicts two boys with their backs to the viewer, gazing beyond...

  • Celebrating History: Neighbor helping neighbor

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

By Emily Mayer One of the most enduring qualities about Hill County is neighbor helping neighbor. This story ran on the front page of The Havre Plaindealer’s October 27, 1917, issue: GRAIN BELT FARMERS HELP SICK NEIGHBOR One of those examples that now and then crop out to disprove the theory of some that the milk of human kindness has curdled in the veins, was enacted in the Grain Belt district last week when neighbors of Guy Chase plowed and seeded 80 acres of winter wheat on the Chase farm. Mr. Chase has been in poor h...

  • Letter to the Editor - Billing problems tip of iceberg at Rocky Boy

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

Editor, One reason Rocky Boy is millions and millions of dollars in unaccountable accounts goes to problems like this. I always pay my water bill. I got a receipt for this month and was billed “again” a few days later. I smiled, knowing someone was going to catch it for this, being I am he American Indian Movement leader here in Lil Russia, aka the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. When I asked how such a thing can happen, they told me “we have no permenant bookkeeper.” I said, “What, no permanent bookkeeper for accounts pa...

  • View from the North 40: A video menagerie of glassworks: My obsession

    Pam Burke|Updated Oct 20, 2017

I didn’t expect to become obsessed with glass-making videos, yet here I am spending several hours a week watching Youtube videos of the folks at the Corning Museum of Glass make the most beautiful glassworks. Just this morning I watched one of their glass artists, called gaffers, and his team of three or four students make one and a half elaborate blue-glass goblets in one hour and 14 minutes — like it was nothing. They took metal rods, stuck them in a vat of molten gla...

  • Letter to the Editor - Don't just tax the homeowners

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

Editor I'll make this short and sweet. I was reading the Havre Daily and every time a mill levy comes up ... let's tax the property owners more! Not! I, for one, am tired of having to foot the bill for everything. It's time they find a way to tax everyone, not just the homeowners. Who's with me? Thank you, Susie Schend Havre...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

You know, Lord, some bumper stickers are worth a chuckle or a big smile; for instance, this one: “I’m in the initials stages in my golden years.” It then listed initials: S. S., C D’s, IRA’S and AARP. As we age, those initials may appear true to life for each of us. There’s a story about a young couple trying to adjust to married life. A special person gave them a bit of advice about using initials o show/tell their spouse how much they love them. It’s fun to see the creative ways where SHMILY can show up. Oh, reader, you don...

  • Pastor's Corner: What would happen if we took responsibility?

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

Fall is upon us, the seasons they are a-changing, and change is in the air. Can we say the same for ourselves? Our world is a mess, our country is a mess, and so are our states and our cities. We have become a world and society where everything is someone else’s fault, and we don’t take responsibility or accountability for what we as individuals say or do. What would you say, though, if I tell you this is nothing new? In fact, it has its roots in the third chapter of Genesis verses 12 and 13 — the man blames the woman and t...

  • Finishing Well: How to pay for what is needed

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

Proverbs 6:6-8 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. As part of this series of articles on aging we began to look at the financial piece last week. A number of people spend incredible amounts of financial resources at the end of their lives. The cost of assisted living or a nursing home facility is way beyond what most of us can afford. If you have a lot of extra cash you can pay directly...

  • Out Our Way: Along the Covenant Trail with Goliath

    Updated Oct 20, 2017

Out our way, before I ride, Goliath and I have a time of working out on the lunge line. I also work with his left and right side to make sure he yields to the reins. The reason is simple - horses need a leader to guide them, - either the dominant alpha horse in the herd or the rider. Without a leader, the individual horse will begin to get anxious and lose all common horse sense. People are also in need of guidance and seek leaders - someone to take responsibility, make...

  • Friday Night Lights: Playoffs are on the Way

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

It might seem hard to believe, but this week is the final week of regular season play for high school football in Montana. Most teams will be wrapping up their seasons this weekend, but many more did so Wednesday, before school was let out for teacher conventions. The Big Sandy Pioneers were one of the teams that got their game out of the way early, as they played host to the Augusta Elks, with a playoff berth and potentially a home playoff game on the line. In the end,...

  • Lights facing a daunting rematch with the powerful Orediggers

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

The Montana State University-Northern football team saw first-hand how lethal the Montana Tech Orediggers are. Last month, the Orediggers scored 70 points and set three school records in a 70-27 win over the Lights at Blue Pony Stadium. Now Northern has to face the same Oredigger offense, and this time, it's in Butte's Alumni Coliseum, and not the friendly confines of Blue Pony Stadium. Northern (0-6, 1-6) and No. 11 Montana Tech (5-1, 5-1) have a rematch set for Saturday at...

  • Finale: Ponies tangle with rival Cowboys

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

As the Havre High football team enters the last week of the season, the Blue Ponies are still searching for their first win. And if they are going to get it, they will need to beat one of the hottest teams in Class A football. While the Ponies come into tonight's game 0-8, the Miles City Cowboys are 6-2 and they got there by winning six straight, including a 28-0 stomping over Sidney last week. Kickoff between the two Eastern A rivals is set for tonight at 6 in Miles City....

  • Finish line in sight

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

  • A bright start on the mat

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

The Montana State University-Northern Lights are still wrestling each other right now. However, that didn't mean there wasn't plenty on the line in Thursday night's Maroon/Gold Dual. Varsity spots were up for grabs in several weight class, but more importantly, the Lights got a taste of regular season-like conditions, with less than two weeks until they take the mat for real in Laramie, Wyoming. "The biggest thing for me to see was them wrestling for a full seven minutes,"...

  • Back on the Floor: Skylights host Bears

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 20, 2017

Exactly two weeks have passed since the last time the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team played a Frontier Conference match. That match, was a road win at UM-Western. And while the Frontier Conference bye week might create a little rust, first-year head coach Rose Obunaga says it was a great time for the Skylights to relax, rest and regroup. "It was good," Obunaga said of the bye week. "We rested, we went back to lifting and working on fundamentals. It was a...
