  • Dems call on Sen. Hansen for emails

    Alex Ross|Updated Nov 1, 2016

The Montana Democratic Party has asked for emails that state Sen. Steve Bullock violated state law by deleting his emails from when he was state attorney general. In a letter dated Oct. 27, Montana Democratic Party Executive Director Nancy Keenan said that she is requesting all emails sent from Hansen’s tenure as a state representative in the 2011 and 2013 legislative sessions and as...

Andrew Brekke, chair of the Hill County Republicans, said both candidates will be at the party’s headquarters at 701 First S...

  • Judge wants evidentiary hearing in juvenile rape case

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

MISSOULA (AP) — A state judge wants to hold an evidentiary hearing on whether a man convicted of a juvenile detention hall rape when he was 17 should be granted a new trial. Retired District Judge Ed McLean held a hearing Friday after Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst and Cody Marble’s attorney Colin Stephens filed a joint motion in September asking for a new trial. Marble was convicted of raping a 13-year-old boy in 2003. Pabst has argued the victim — who committed suicide during a standoff with Havre police in 2014...

  • Outside company scamming local businesses

    Paul Dragu|Updated Nov 1, 2016

Havre Public School officials say an outside company is soliciting advertisements from local businesses in the name of the school district without the school’s permission or knowledge. “If we are asking for help from the community, we’d contact you,” Havre High School Activities Director Dennis Murphy said this morning. Havre Public Schools Superintendent Andy Carlson said the school district has no plans to run a fundraising campaign via phone or electronically. “If Havre Public Schools were to implement an electroni...

    Paul Dragu|Updated Nov 1, 2016

Two drivers are accused of drunkenly taking turns behind the wheel as they led police on a high speed chase from Fort Belknap to east of Chinook Friday night in a stolen SUV carrying five people, including a 16-month-old boy. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Matthew Finley said the 2015 Ford Escape used in the chase had reached speeds of up to 120 mph and was eventually stopped, and three people were arrested after the vehicle ran over spike strips that were laid out by Blaine County sheriff’s deputies. Terry Sandcrane of F...

  • Front residents learn to live with the wind

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

KARL PUCKETT Great Falls Tribune GREAT FALLS (AP) — Straps are stretched over the roof of a house and connected to chains on the ground so it doesn’t blow away. The grocery store has a new roof. Wind ripped the old roof off a few years ago. Last summer, a wind-driven wildfire burst out of the mountains, prompting the evacuation of the town. This is Heart Butte on the Blackfeet Reservation on the Rocky Mountain Front, which continually breathes strong winds on downslope communities, especially in the fall and winter. Cla...

  • Montana's Trap-Free Public Lands: Making our public lands safer

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Montana, as all of us who live here know, is remarkable state, blessed with extraordinary natural resources. Glacier National Park is a jewel. Montana’s water network feeds the continent’s major river basins. And the state hosts the greatest diversity of mammals. But what tarnishes our public lands is the constant risk of walking into traps … both by hikers and their companion animals. This is far more than a nuisance. It’s an horrific encounter that’s potentially lethal to our pets. Hamilton-based veterinarian Dr. Alan Appl...

  • Use accurate information when voting on Supreme Court race

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Every two years, we Montanans elect a judge to our Supreme Court. This is one of the most important votes we cast. It must be based on accurate information or we run the risk of electing the wrong person. As lawyers, who have represented Montanans for decades, allow us to share our thoughts. First, why is our vote important? Something like 90 percent of the judicial decisions affecting our lives are made by our Montana Supreme Court. Everything from access to our lands and waters to the safety of our families and communities...

  • Time to change the form of Havre city government

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, At the time of writing this opinion, our next and last public hearing will be Nov. 1 at the City Hall chambers at 7 p.m. First thing, I, as the chairman of the Local Government Review Commission, want to state that it was over a year before I felt this recommendation we’ve proposed in unanimous decision was the appropriate change to offer you, the voters, along with the charter. In 1996, the last Havre Local Government Review Study Commission — Dorothy Gail Radar, chair, Robert W. Keeler and James P. O’Leary — studied...

  • Vote no on I-177

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, Recently, there was an advertisement in the Great Falls Tribune and other newspapers displaying the names of 63 veterinarians who supported the Ballot Initiative I-177. There are more than 2,200 licensed veterinarians in the state of Montana. In my opinion, this indicates that there are more than 2,100 licensed veterinarians who oppose I-177. Of these veterinarians many are hunters, trappers, fishermen, and outdoorsmen and women. I-177 is not about a few dogs and cats that get caught annually in traps. I-177 is about...

  • Consider how you can reduce waste on America Recycles Day

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day — a nationally recognized day intended to promote community recycling efforts and help educate Americans about recycling. Now, as far as days go, America Recycles Day may not have the gravitas of a Columbus Day, or that unique blend of optimism coupled with despair that comes with a Valentine’s Day, or even the anticipation of your average Friday. But what makes America Recycles Day special is its grassroots approach to empowering people and organizations who are passionate about rec...

  • Ads against I-181 misleading

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, Two weeks before the election, the MEA-MFT’s national organization dumped $528,000 into inaccurate and misleading ads against I-181, the Montana Biomedical Research Fund. This legislation could aid virtually every Montana family, covering everything from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS and strokes to diabetes, PTSD, depression, autism and addictions. One would hope that $528,000 at the last minute can’t dupe Montanans into voting against their own best interests. Montanans need to speak, and the initiative process is our...

  • Vote for Hess on her record

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, It’s about time to set the record straight on Rep. Stephanie Hess’ business record. Even though the local Havre Area Chamber of Commerce won’t tell any of the businesses in town, the state Chamber of Commerce will. Stephanie Hess got a 94 percent rating with the Montana Chamber for her votes to support small business. The highest-rated democrat in the entire House of Representatives got a 63 percent. And Gov. Steve Bullock got a whopping 54 percent. This is just a fact. Hess’ young opponent says he will be pro-bus...

  • Hi-Line Athletes of the Week

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Dylan Miller, North Star Football Things didn't exactly end well for the North Star Knights in football, as the Knights were blown out in the first round of the Class C Six-Man playoffs last Saturday at Hot Springs. However, it was still a strong season for the Knights, and Dylan Miller was a big reason why. Playing running back, receiver and multiple positions on defense, Miller was stellar from start to finish, including averaging nearly 150 yards of total offense per game....

  • Skylights excited to play at vaunted Lady Griz

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 1, 2016

The game won’t count in the record books, or in any standings, but it certainly matters to both teams playing inside Dahlberg Arena tonight in Missoula. That’s because tonight’s exhibition game is a big opportunity for both the Montana State University-Northern Skylights, and the Montana Lady Griz — for different reasons. For the 3-0 Skylights, ranked 16th in the NAIA, it’s a chance to take on one of the big fish. A chance to see just what they’re made of against a historic...

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: Beeters reign over the 6C East goes on

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 1, 2016

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have already put together a District 6C East volleyball dynasty. What they did this past week merely added to it. On Friday, on their home floor, the Beeters captured their fourth straight 6C East championship by beating the North Star Knights in the 6C East championship match. The win not only gave Chinook yet another district championship, but, it capped a second straight season in which the Beeters didn’t lose a single match to a district o...
