  • Trump win predictable, but not to pollsters

    Updated Nov 11, 2016

When people tell me that Donald Trump’s election as the nation’s 45th president shocked them, I reply that they must not be paying attention to what goes on around them. The nation is a mess — the economy is in the doldrums, most of the few available jobs are part-time and low-paying, the infrastructure is crumbling, the massive $20 trillion national debt is getting bigger, the $531 billion trade deficit is poised to go higher — and these are merely the most glaring problems that have festered under President Obama. And sin...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Nov 11, 2016

You know, Lord, long ago there was a story told of an old Italian artist who had lost some of his skill. One evening he sat discouraged before a painting he had just completed. He noticed that he had lost some of his touch. The canvas did not burst with life as it once did, and he went sadly to bed. Later on, his son, also an artist, came to examine his father’s work; he, too, noticed the lack of life in his father’s painting. Taking the palette, he worked far into the night, adding a little touch here, a smudge there, a lit...

  • Pastor's Corner:

    Updated Nov 11, 2016

As I write this article, it is Monday morning, Nov. 7, 2016. Our nation’s Election Day has not yet taken place. Tuesday, Nov. 8, the United States of America chooses its next president and — whichever candidate is elected — a new era is born in our country! Amidst all of the political ads, amidst our many citizens casting their votes, amidst a monumental week in our country — I am reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 2:1-3: “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving...

  • Out Our Way:

    Updated Nov 11, 2016

Mark 9:42-50 Out our way, as Goliath is fond of reminding me, if you want to see an example of a forgiving, patient and loving heart, look to the horse. How many times has old Doc patiently waited for me to go through my clumsy attempts at saddling him up for a ride - and discover the saddle is too far forward or too far back once I have tightened the cinch - and I have to start all over again? How many times have I confused him with mixed signals - telling him one thing with...

  • Hi-Line Living: KNMC revives the radio star

    Alex Ross|Updated Nov 11, 2016

KNMC's Rock Lotto drew scores of music lovers to Town Square during this year's Havre Festival Day's celebration in September. The event consisted of five bands whose members were chosen at random, each tasked with performing five cover songs that spanned from the '50s to the '90s. Dave Martens, an organizer of the Rock Lotto and manager of KNMC, Montana State University-Northern's radio station, said at the time that the concert was both a means to promote local music and a...

  • Nationals finally make a return to the Havre Ice Dome

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 11, 2016

After a hectic schedule recently, the Glacier Nationals finally get to play on their home ice this weekend and with just one game on the slate, it will allow them a nice break afterward. In terms of winnable games, tonight's contest inside the Havre Ice Dome against the Helena Bighorns certainly counts as one. The first puck will drop tonight at 7:30. While the Nationals, who, along with Helena, are part of the Frontier Division in the North American Tier 3 Hockey League,...

  • Cats, Griz one week away from Brawl

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 11, 2016

The annual Brawl of the Wild is now just one week away. But, before the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats can focus on their annual rivalry game, they have to get through important battles this Saturday. The Bobcats (0-6, 2-7) haven’t won a game since Sept. 17, and their last chance to do that at home will come Saturday when they host the UC Davis Aggies (1-5, 2-7) in Bozeman. And while the six-game losing streak has been a rough one for the Cats, they have a c...

  • Lights take one last shot at victory

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 11, 2016

Over the last several weeks, opportunities to win football games have been few and far between for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. To say it’s been a rough stretch for the Lights would be an understatement. However, on the most special day of the season, the Lights have one final shot to put a W in the win column. That chance will come Saturday when Northern (1-8, 1-8) closes out the 2016 season with its senior day game against the College of Idaho Yotes (2-7, 3...

  • MOUNT McKinley

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 11, 2016

Take one look at Zach McKinley after a Montana State University-Northern football game and it’s obvious, he’s left everything on the field, he's given his team, and the game all he has. Tired, drenched in sweat no matter the temperature, bruised and battered, McKinley gives it everything he’s got, every game, no matter what the scoreboard says. For four seasons, and close to six years at Northern, that’s what he’s done. But, when McKinley leaves the field at Blue Pony Stad... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: A class defined by its character

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 9, 2016

Senior day for any college football team is special. It's a time to stand up in front of family, friends and teammates and be honored for hard work, dedication, unselfishness and all the accomplishments that come with being a football player. It's a time to be honored for giving of one's self for four, five and even six years. And all of that is true when it comes to the 15 Montana State University-Northern seniors who will be honored before Saturday's season finale against...

  • MSU-N Game Day Feature: Underrated, not underappreciated

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 9, 2016

In college football, at any level, the last game of the season is always significant. And it has nothing to do with playoff berths or the final standings. It has to do with college football players, playing their final game, doing something they have done their whole lives - one final time. This Saturday, at Blue Pony Stadium, that will be the case for senior wide receiver/running back Mario Gobbato as the Lights get set to take on the College of Idaho in the final game of the...
