  • Dish Detergent DDT and deluded devotees to disparate deities

    Rick Dow

Other than delivering the Boston Globe door to door each morning before junior high school, the first clock-punching job that I ever had was that of a dishwasher. In 1980 $3.10 per hour was amazing money compared to delivering papers. The work was smelly and strenuous but hey, did I mention the astronomical pay rate? If the number of dinners served were favorable to the owner/chef, he would make me any item from the menu right before we closed the kitchen and finished the cleanup process. It was a great gig. During college,...

Though questions were open to everyone, most were directed to Gerrity about the intentions of foundation. He attempte...

    Zach White

Havre City Council will meet a half hour earlier tonight at 6:30 p.m. to hear what the public wants to do with Community Transportation Enhancement Program money. The council will hear what people came up with tonight so they can have a proposal sent to the state by the end of the year, with the hope of having a pro...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern volleyball team's Frontier Conference Tournament opener got off a to a rocky start. But the Skylights made sure their season didn't end without a fight. Friday night in Lewiston, Idaho, MSU-N's season did indeed come to an end with a three-game loss to nationally ranked Rocky Mountain College, but Northern showed some grit in its last match of what has been a much-improved season. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Tennessee Titans suffered their second straight road loss Sunday as they fell to the Miami Dolphins 29-17 in Miami. But former Havre Blue Pony marc Mariani was plenty busy competing against some old friends. Sunday's game between the Titans and Dolphins reunited Mariani with former Grizzly teammates Dan Carpenter and Lex Hilliard, and they went head-to-head. Carpenter, Miami's Pro Bowl kicker fed Mariani four kickoffs, and the former UM wide receiver dazzled his old teammates with some nifty moves to the tune of 92...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Lights held out key starters, including Evan Hinebauch, Ethan Hinebauch, Anthony Weerheim, Rudy Shaffroth and Chase Dirden Saturday. But one Light saw plenty of success. Northern true freshman Cameron Neiss wrestled his way to an outstanding second-place finish in the amateur division at 133 pounds. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

  • So close: Pioneers fall just short

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

BIG SANDY - In the game of football a lot depends on how a team starts, and in state playoff action, the Big Sandy Pioneers saw that first hand. Saturday in Big Sandy, the Northern C Pioneers hosted the Eastern C Savage Warriors in a Class C Six-Man state semifinal matchup. But suffering a 41-38 loss, the Pioneers' impressive season came to an end. The postseason loss was only the second loss of the season for the young Pioneers. And competing in the state semifinal game was big accomplishment for the Pioneers team that head...

  • Chinook's comeback produces a new star

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

CHINOOK — Coming into Saturday's historic semifinal win over the Power-Dutton-Brady Titans, Chinook freshman Zach Molyneaux was really waiting in the wings for his chance to have an impact on the Beeters' vaunted rushing attack. And that's only because his older brother, Tyler Molyneaux came into Saturday's 28-26 come-from-behind win as the leading rusher in Class C football, and he, along with junior Ben Stroh are the best two-back tandem in eight-man football. But after Saturday, that tandem turned into a trio as the y...

  • Beeter Power

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

CHINOOK — The Chinook Sugarbeeters were trying to make history, but it was history which wasn't on the Beeters' side. Having never played for a state championship in football at any level, Chinook also had history working against it at halftime of Saturday's Class C semifinal game with Northern C rival Power-Dutton-Brady in Chinook. History says teams just don't come back from 26-6 halftime deficits, especially teams that rely so heavily on the running game. But Saturday afternoon was all about history for the Beeters and t...

  • Ethics panel begins deliberations in Rangel case

    LARRY MARGASAK Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Shortly after veteran Rep. Charles Rangel of New York walked out of his ethics trial in protest, a House panel began closed-door deliberations Monday on 13 counts of alleged financial and fundraising misconduct that could bring formal condemnation. Only recently one of the most powerful members of Congress, Rangel was reduced to pleading in vain for colleagues to give him time to raise money for a lawyer before taking up the charges. The 80-year-old congressman left when they said no, and the rare p...

  • E-mail secondary as Facebook revamps messaging

BARBARA ORTUTAY MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writers

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook unveiled a new messaging platform Monday that takes aim at one of the Internet's first applications, e-mail. Though CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn't go as far as declaring e-mail dead, he sees the four-decade-old technology as secondary to more seamless, faster ways of communicating such as text messages and chats. In other words, Facebook is betting that today's high school students are on to something. "We don't think a modern messaging system is going to be e-mail," Zuckerberg said at a special even...
