  • Celebrating History: War news and malcontents

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

By Emily Mayer There wasn't much local news in The Havre Plaindealer's Nov. 17, 1917 edition, but the war and its effects were quite prominent. • View from the North 40: The things we pile preciously

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 17, 2017

The problem is that, and this needs explaining, I come from a long line of pile-makers on the maternal side of my family. Not hoarders — we’re pilers, like hoarders-lite. We don’t save bizarre stuff like stacks of every McDonald’s french fry holder we’ve ever gotten with a meal or all the hairballs brushed off the dogs. We don’t have to negotiate a maze of newspaper towers to get down the hallway to the bathroom. We don’t have one room of the house set aside just to hold...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

You know, Lord, an article on care giving reminds us how hard and stressful the work is and that caregivers, even if they feel good about the chance to give back, need to take care of themselves, too. Albeit, there is bound to be feelings of anxiety, guilt, isolation, exhaustion, confusion and where to turn for help. But despite whatever mishaps, mayhem or maladies, how about adding some humor in even the toughest situation? When one becomes a caregiver, first off, one needs to know that they have to change the way they live...

  • Pastor's Corner: Thankfulness and giving are at the very core of true joy

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

Over the years, I have come to realize that thankfulness and giving are at the very core of true joy. This is illustrated in the Gospel of Luke 17:11-19. Call me a stickler. Call me a creature of habit. Call me ADD. For the past 25 years and especially the past 15 years, I’ve written in the margin of my Bible who preached the sermon and the day. On Nov. 8, 2004, Rowlie Hutton preached a sermon from Luke 17:11-19. We know it as “Healing the Ten Lepers.” In the margin I wrote these three words three times: “Than...

  • Out Our Way: Along the Covenant Trail with Goliath

    Updated Nov 17, 2017

Out our way, we often marvel at the resilience of creation. A few years ago I rode with some fellow pastors through a portion of "The Bob" - Bob Marshall Wilderness - a year after a terrible forest fire had destroyed a large section of it. Even a year later we could smell the smoke as we rode through miles of dead trees and soot. It was a terrible sight and a vast wasteland - or so I thought until someone spotted green growth in the midst of the ashes. Folks familiar with the...

  • Lights crown Knights in home debut

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 17, 2017

On the scoreboard, the Montana State University-Northern Lights dominated Warner-Pacific in their home debut. That doesn't mean the Lights wrestled perfectly, though. In fact, veteran head coach Tyson Thivierge thought it was far from perfection. The No. 12 Lights beat the visiting Knights in a Cascade Conference dual, 34-12, Thursday night in the Armory Gymnasium, in the only dual the Lights will wrestle at home before the new year. And while Northern did score three pins...

  • It will be a Brawl in Bozeman

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 17, 2017

One has it, the other is trying to take it away. That's how it always is leading into the annual meeting between the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats. And ahead of the 117th edition of the Brawl of the Wild, the Bobcats have the Divide Trophy - the Grizzlies want it back. "We're definitely bitter about that," Montana's Tucker Schye said of the Grizzlies' 24-17 loss in last year's Cat-Griz showdown. "They stole one from us and we're gonna take it back and then...

  • Cat-Griz Game Day: He's got his own legacy now

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 15, 2017

When it comes to football in the Treasure State, his last name says it all - Bignell. That's a famous name when it comes to gridiron success in Montana. So it's no wonder Montana State senior linebacker Mac Bignell is one of the best at what he does in the Big Sky Conference, ahead of his final game in Bobcat Stadium. And that game, for a guy like Bignell, will mean everything, because it's against the Montana Grizzlies. And while Bignell certainly has a famous last name when...

  • Cat-Griz Game Day: Everything #37 is supposed to be

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 14, 2017

To guys like Tucker Schye, the Cat-Griz game isn't any old football game. It's not the next game on the schedule, or any other cliché' generally reserved for down-playing hype and excitement. No, to Schye, who grew up on the Montana Grizzlies, and the Brawl of the Wild down the Hi-Line in Malta, the Cat-Griz game is something more, it's special, it's the opportunity of a lifetime. "It's really special," Schye said of the rivalry. "It's something you have an appreciation for...
