  • Hi-Line Living: Feeding the soul

    Alex Ross|Updated Nov 21, 2015

Janet Tams likes to say her job as director of Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen on 2nd Street in Havre was "heaven sent." Three years ago, Tams, a Havre native, who spent 30 years living and raising her family in California, came back home. Before heading off to an appointment with job services, she said a prayer, asking God to help her find a job that would allow her to simultaneously make a living and serve the community. Soon after, Tams was approached by a woman she knew from th...

    John Kelleher|Updated Nov 20, 2015

Montana’s unemployment rate stood steady at 4.1 percent in October, nearly a full percentage point behind the national average. “Montana’s economy continued to show strength as we entered the fall,” Gov. Steve Bullock said. “With over 10,000 jobs added over the last 12 months, Montanans are on the job and earning higher wages.” “Montana’s unemployment rate is holding steady at just over 4 percent, which is considered an ideal level for unemployment,” said Labor and Industry Commissioner Pam Bucy. Seven hundred jobs were...

  • View from the North 40: Things my husband says ...

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 20, 2015

“Gawd, I’m [blanking] awesome!” my husband said after helping me in the kitchen. I had just made a big pot of stew and was in the middle of kneading dough for a batch of homemade Middle Eastern flatbread to go with it, but thank gawd(!) he was eager save the day with his innate cooking prowess. He poured olive oil into a bowl until I said when. Surely the meal would’ve been a complete loss without this awesomeness. In almost every photo I’ve seen of John from his youth, he...

  • Montana's bumpy road to clean power plan compliance

    Updated Nov 20, 2015

What would it take for Montana to produce electricity in a way that reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 47 percent? It’s not a hypothetical question. It’s the mandate set for the state in the Environmental Protection Agency’s final version of its Clean Power Plan, released in August 2015. And compliance with that mandate — which requires a larger percentage of CO2 reductions in Montana than any other state — is more than a technological or engineering challenge. It could involve walking away from assets that have provided...

    Updated Nov 20, 2015

Jesus went out once again along the lakeside, and the whole crowd followed, watching and listening closely to all he said and did. They came to the table of those who collected taxes on behalf of the enemy and there was one called Levi, the son of Alpheus. Jesus shocked the crowd by calling to Levi and saying "Follow me." Levi shocked ever one even further by immediately getting up and doing just that. - Mark 2:13-14 (John Bruington's version) Out our way, we know the way of c...

  • CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY: Beeters seek redemption against Arlee

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 20, 2015

For 12 months, the Chinook Sugarbeeters have wanted one thing: redemption, and now, after a long journey back to the state championship game, they have their chance to get it. All season, Chinook has used its loss to Wibaux in the Class C 8-Man state title game a year ago as fuel for an incredible 11-0 campaign. But before they can truly achieve satisfaction and call themselves state champions, the Beeters must take down Alree (12-0), the champion of the Western C, who they...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 20, 2015

The Box Elder Bears have been dreaming big all season long and now, finally, they will have the chance to do something no Box Elder football team has ever done before. Before the season, it had been decades since the Bears had made the playoffs in football, and in the school’s history, no football team had ever played in a state championship game. Thanks to an incredible run, though, that will change Saturday as the Bears will travel to Stanford to take on D...

  • Lights take a trip to DII Chadron

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 20, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern Lights came home from Las Vegas last weekend with a big, big win. Northern knocked off fourth-ranked Arizona Christian in overtime last Saturday afternoon — which was certainly a statement victory for the unranked Lights. However, as good as Arizona Christian is, the Lights (7-0) will step up in competition Monday when they travel to Nebraska to take on Chadron State, an NCAA Division II program. The Chadron game was a late addition to M...

  • High stakes as Cats host Griz

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 20, 2015

Three playoff games, recruiting season, winter conditioning, spring ball, a long, dry summer, fall camp and 10 regular season games. That’s what has passed since the Montana Grizzlies beat the Montana State Bobcats in the 2014 Brawl of the Wild last November in Missoula. Now it’s time to do it all over again. Now the 115th Brawl of the Wild is finally here. And, like in every Brawl, there’s plenty at stake when the Bobcats (3-4, 5-5) host the No. 17 Grizzlies (5-2, 6-4) Satur...

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 20, 2015

The Southern Oregon Raiders have been a thorn in the side of the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team in recent years. And, they've been one of the best in the NAIA. But on Thursday night, inside the Armory Gymnasium, the fifth-ranked Lights, with an impressive youth movement, turned the tables on the 14th-ranked Raiders, with a dominating 31-11 victory. • Cat-Griz Feature: A dream job, and a wild season

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 19, 2015

When Bob Stitt was announced the Montana Grizzlies new head coach last December, he talked about this being his dream job. But, it's highly unlikely Stitt could have dreamt of a first season like the one the Grizzlies have had. Heading into his first Brawl of the Wild, Saturday in Bozeman, Stitt's Grizzlies are on the verge of making the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. But, at 6-4, a loss to the Bobcats would likely eliminate the Griz from those playoffs. And that'...

  • Cat-Griz Feature: Successful Ash now a Brawl veteran

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 19, 2015

Even with a win in the 115th Brawl of the Wild Saturday inside Bobcat Stadium, the Montana State Bobcats won't be a part of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs next week. And that's a bit shocking considering the Bobcats were picked to win the Big Sky Conference back in the summer, and have one of the best offenses in all of the FCS. But, there's no need to think the Cats are just going to lay down and be a red carpet for their hated rival, the Montana Grizzlies,...
