The Havre Daily News asked people to submit their memories of what happened on Nov. 22, 1963, in their lives. Here is a sampling of their responses. As most Americans I can remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news — I had my first job as an R.N. at Liberty County Hospital in Chester — we were scrubbed into surgery when the lab tech stepped in and told us the news. After the surgery the nursing staff decided to inform the patients individually in case the news caused severe problems to the very ill patients It...

  • Havre recalls Kennedy death

    John Kelleher|Updated Nov 21, 2013

Toni Hagener recalls hearing on the radio that President Kennedy had been shot. Like many Havreites on Friday, Nov. 22, 1963, she rushed to the television to see what was unfolding. Her immediate concern was for the children. Her own young children would soon be on their lunch hour. "How do you explain this to children," she thought. "I felt sorry for the teachers." Havre, like the rest of the nation, stopped in its tracks when it heard of the assassination. Special prayer...

  • How I lost my sense of humor and found dry on wry

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Nov 21, 2013

The first day on our scenic detour through the Baja Peninsula was an exercise in holding my breath and shoving phantom brake pedals through the floor of the passenger side of Roshanna Van. I left my fingernails imbedded in the dash. My friend Lupe corkscrewed us up impossible peaks on an itsy-bitsy two-lane with no shoulders, not even a white line in places, a transport truck on every curve. He was focused but calm. One might say I was the slightest bit tense. Lupe’s friends h...
