  • Celebrating History: Railway unions elect officers

    Updated Nov 24, 2017

By Emily Mayer Aside from articles pertaining to the effects the war was having on various businesses and activities, there were a few articles of local interest. Two local railroad unions selected their officers, and since there are still family members in this community as well as people living outside of the Havre area that read this column and are family of the men named, I thought you would like to read their names and what they were elected by their peers to serve: MEMBERS OF RAILWAY TRAINMEN ELECT OFFICERS The local...

  • Modernizing our tax code will help Montana small business

    Updated Nov 24, 2017

It has been 30 years since the last time our nation’s tax code has been overhauled. In that time, the tax rate we levy on businesses has become one of the highest in the world, the tax code itself has become an incomprehensible mess, and special interests have drilled it full of loopholes that benefit narrow constituencies. Editor, With a final deadline coming very soon and a final payment disbursement of the remaining Pembima Monies, I hope it goes to The People and not stolen like our monies were by the corrupt tribal council here (at Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation) on the Cobell Pay out. We got $300 from an allocated $1,492 per capita. From that money, they gave themselves a $30,000 incentive raise. The mere fact that three councilmen refused taking it shows that it was immoral and not right or they would have taken it themselves. The t...

  • View from the North 40: Here's to the self-made rocket man

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 24, 2017

While basking in the afterglow of too much Thanksgiving, rushing into pre-Christmas sale-ing and joining in the holiday season openers, we should all take a moment to send good thoughts to Mike Hughes, a 61-year-old southern California limo driver and nascent astronaut whose maiden voyage toward outer space is planned for this weekend. Hughes has spent about $20,000 building a rocket — and launch pad made from a mobile home — to take him into space, and this weekend’s pilot...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Nov 24, 2017

You know, Lord, friends were commenting about their home. Even Goliath was willing to brave a terribl...
