  • Hingham: Still hanging on

    Paul Dragu|Updated Nov 27, 2015

The old bank building in the declining town of Hingham burned in 2010 and stood as a shell until two weeks ago, when mighty prairie winds blew its charred remains to the ground. When Mayor Ray Lipp was asked if he had considered the building's collapse as a symbolic foreshadowing of Hingham's future, he remained pragmatic. "Well, it needed to be torn down anyway. It was already a done deal," he said, shrugging matter-of-factly. Lipp isn't just the cowboy boot-wearing,...

  • Firefighter union pulls grievance

    John Kelleher|Updated Nov 27, 2015

The International Association of Fire Fighters Havre chapter has dropped its grievance against the city of Havre over a letter of reprimand put in the file of firefighter D.J. Olson. Olson has returned to work after a suspension with pay. Olson was given the reprimand over a disagreement with Deputy Fire Chief Norm Paulsen. Management contended Olson's actions were insubordination, while the union said the problem was caused by a misunderstanding and the retaliation came because Olson filed a human relations complaint...

  • Many help put on Thanksgiving meal

    John Kelleher|Updated Nov 27, 2015

People came from all walks of life to volunteer at the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Senior citizens were there, as were the Montana State University-Northern Lights and Skylights basketball teams. Boy Scouts working on their badges and 4-H members were on hand. A young man who had to perform community service before returning to Montana Youth Challenge Academy in Dillon worked for a while. Local ministers pitched in, as did volunteers from Havre parishes. Families,...

  • Looking Out My Back Door: True confessions amid a fiesta of my friends

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Nov 27, 2015

When I was 11, 12, 13 and 14 I wanted to join a cloistered order of nuns. It was either a good thing or too bad that any order where I could have boarded for school and preparation was out of my reach. By 15, latent puberty had taken over my mind and emotions. I was rather backward. In those days it meant something special if I said, “He looked at me.” In a modified way I got my wish when I moved to Mexico. I live in a small casita by myself. In the months when the sno...

  • View from the North 40: Thanksgiving tradition - or not

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 27, 2015

We serve up the word “traditional” a lot when talking about Thanksgiving dinner, but it’s now clear that our grade school textbooks lied to us about the origins of this holiday. Or maybe you went to a better school than I did. Smithsonianmag.com writer Megan Gambino tells us that the official, federally recognized holiday of Thanksgiving comes to us thanks to the remarkably persistent efforts of Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of what was in the early to mid-1800s a popular women...

  • Questions about refugees are just not that simple

    Updated Nov 27, 2015

The author of the opinion piece entitled “Montana and Havre should welcome refugees” makes some thoughtful and valid points regarding available work and housing in our community and encouraging the residents of Havre to be welcoming and neighborly. Well and good. However, I disagree with the main premise of his argument as reflected in the following statements: “The Old Testament tells us to show justice and mercy to the foreigner seeking refuge among us, because the Israelites knew full well what it was like to be stran...

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

    Updated Nov 27, 2015

Dart — The Fort Belknap tribal courts and corrections system is steadfast in making sure that the public doesn't know what is going on with the prisoner who escaped from custody in Havre last week. Under pressure from a reporter, an unnamed spokeswoman agreed that Gabriel Arkinson was still in custody at Fort Belknap. What judge ordered him to jail? What exactly is he charged with doing? How did he manage to escape custody in the middle of Havre? None of the public’s business, was the answer, in effect. Laurel — Commu...

  • Out Our Way: The red kettles

    Updated Nov 27, 2015

Out our way, the folks from the Salvation Army are getting out the little red kettles. Unlike most folks, Christmas goes on all year round for Sally Ann and her crew. But Christmas season is when folks are the most likely to remember their less fortunate neighbors and make an extra effort. So out come the red kettles and the volunteers to ring the bells and begin asking the community to be generous ... for the funds collected are not just for the Christmas season, but help fun...

  • Pastor's Corner: The cost of Thanksgiving

    Updated Nov 27, 2015

The price we pay to be thankful is a costly one. Having just celebrated Thanksgiving, we know that thankfulness is a concept not fully mastered. Our culture communicates with a narcissistic mindset in all things, placing themselves at the forefront of every conversation and every decision. Rejoicing in what benefits themselves, they find discontentment and unfulfillment as the chauffeurs of the soul taking them to places that bring no eternal return. For instance, when they do not receive what they desire they find...

  • Griz meet Jacks in the playoffs

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 27, 2015

The University of Montana Grizzlies got to Saturday’s Football Championship Subdivision first-round game against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits the hard, hard way. But, because Montana had to win three straight games to get in into the FCS’ big dance, it means the Griz are coming in hot. Winners of three straight, including blowouts over rivals Eastern Washington and Montana State, the No. 16 Griz (7-4) will host the No. 10 Jackrabbits (8-3) Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Was...

  • Skylights face tough rematch at Blue Hawks

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 27, 2015

The Dickinson State women’s basketball team has some very impressive wins this season, and just one blemish on its record. That one blemish just happens to be a loss to the still unbeaten Montana State University-Northern Skylights. And that’s why Northern head coach Chris Mouat believes Saturday’s rematch between the No. 6 Skylights (6-0) and Blue Hawks (6-1) will be one of Northern’s toughest games to date when they meet Saturday in Dickinson, North Dakota. “They’r...

  • Nationals home to host Americans tonight

    Chris Peterson|Updated Nov 27, 2015

The day after Thanksgiving is always a great day for sports. But when it comes to Havre, the only game in town on Thanksgiving weekend will be the Glacier Nationals, who are looking to brighten their season with a pair of upset victories. The Nationals will get their first shot at an upset on tonight, when they will host the Great Falls Americans at the Havre Ice Dome. Glacier will be looking to avenge an 8-2 defeat, while at the same time snap an eight-game winless streak....
