Following a dream season, the accolades just keep pouring in for the Chinook football team. Six Sugarbeeters and five Chester/J-I Hawks were named Northern C All-Conference this season, as both teams had strong showings in the league this year. Five of the six Beeters to earn all conference were selected for two positions, while C/J-I had three players earn all conference at two different positions. Leading the way for Chinook was senior Tyler Molyneaux, Jorrell Jones and junior Ben Stroh who were selected first team both...
The Hill County Park Board and Hill County Commission are moving forward with an idea for a new fundraiser for Beaver Creek Park — a specialty license plate — and are holding a contest to find a design. The Park Board, at its meeting last night, discussed the idea, proposed by board member Robbie Lucke. Commissioner Kathy Bessette said the entry forms would be printed today and available at the commissioner's office in the Hill County Courthouse on 3rd Avenue and 4th Street. According to a webpage at the state Department of...
The Hill County Park Board Monday night reviewed plans to provide high-speed Internet access in the south Havre. Triangle Communications representatives presented the company's plan to install fiber-to-home technology to allow high-speed access, including installation along a route in the park. Ken Wagner of Triangle said the schedule opens May 1, with construction planned over the summer. The actual timeline will depend on details to be worked out with contractors, he said. The construction in Beaver Creek Park would run by...
The Hill County Park Board heard a description during its meeting Monday night of several hundreds of dollars worth of vandalism in the park last month. Beaver Creek Park Superintendent Chad Edgar said someone in mid-November drove through regions of the park, shooting out the flashing lights on "Cattle on the Park" signs and knocking down several of those and other signs. The damage was estimated at $850, Edgar said. He said a suspect is identified, and if the case is successfully prosecuted, the county could receive...
A report that some Republicans are considering bypassing the governor by using referendums to send issues to the voters received mixed reviews from Havre-area legislators. The Associated Press reported last week that some Republicans are considering the tactic in order to avoid a gubernatorial veto on some issues. While the Republicans will control the Senate and the House in 2011, there aren't enough Republicans in the Senate to override a veto by Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer. Kris Hansen, representative-elect for House...
The biggest subject of discussion at Monday night's Havre City Council meeting was a resolution "Affirming Support for the Designation of 24-Hour Commercial Status for the International Ports of Entry of Wild Horse and Turner. " The tied vote was broken by Mayor Tim Solomon, who opposed passing the resolution at this time. The resolution was introduced by Bear Paw Development Corp. Executive Director Paul Tuss. Tuss told the council that the resolution was a part of a regional collaboration, involving many communities across...
WASHINGTON — Facing a Democratic rebellion, President Barack Obama on Tuesday staunchly defended his decision to compromise with Republicans and temporarily extend about-to-expire tax cuts for all Americans. "There are some who would have preferred a protracted political fight," the president said at a White House news conference a day after the deal was announced. "And I understand the desire for a fight. I'm sympathetic to that." But, he said, a long political battle "would be a bad deal for the economy. And it would be a...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has ruled that a postnuptial marital agreement giving sole ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers to Frank McCourt is not valid — a decision that isn't expected to affect team operations but means the Dodgers could be shared under California community property law. Jamie McCourt's lawyer, David Boies, said his client was pleased with the decision, but she wants a reasonable resolution of divorce negotiations that involved the postnuptual agreement. "It's in the interest of her, her family, Dodger fan...
Calif. band thanks Havre for support Editor: Hi, everyone. Well the band didn't win, but with more than 101 band entries, 10,000 votes between the top 10, and great competition, we landed in third place. Thanks SO much for all the Havre support. It means a great deal to me when I see the support from the community I grew up in. Making the Top 10 is an honor and placing third is amazing. I (and the band) truly appreciate it. If we ever go on tour I'll make sure Havre is on the list. Pete Soyer, Pleasanton, Calif. Editor: Hi,...
Editor: Post-traumatic stress disorder is a problem in any community containing warriors or old soldiers — and also very young soldiers just out of Afghanistan and Iraq. If these young warriors learn to cope with their symptoms, they are no trouble to the community nor to themselves. Women may be affected as much and as often as men. Dogs, too, have symptoms. If PTSD sufferers do not learn to cope with their symptoms — as all older PTSD sufferers must have done, since suicide is a common symptom — they can indeed be a dange...
Editor: 'The Food Safety Modernization Act' (SB 510) was passed by the U. S. Senate on Dec. 2. The most recent problem with this bill, which originated in the Senate, is that it raises revenue through various fees. According to the U. S. Constitution Section 7, the first sentence states: "All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; " therefore, a constitutional challenge will likely prevent it from becoming law. This exposes a structural shortcoming by all of those involved. This error...
The Frontier Conference has decided to wait until at least February to vote on, and possibly approve adding schools to the league. That decision came during Monday and Tuesday's Frontier Conference meetings in Billings. According to Montana State University-Northern Athletic Director Mark Samson, the league has decided to explore several different scenarios over the next month and will reconvene Feb. 6-8 in Billings to meet with the schools who are seeking admittance to the league. For more, see this week's Havre Daily...
Montana State Trooper David DeLaittre will be missed by his former colleagues up here on the Hi-Line. DeLaittre left his first duty station in Chinook, based in Havre, earlier this year, in April. All of the local enforcement agencies he worked with during that time remember him well and will be showing their support at DeLaittre's memorial service tomorrow at 2 p.m at Three Forks High School. The Chinook Police Department will be sending three officers to the service, which happens to be the entirety of the Chinook police...

After making the playoffs this year as well, two North Star Knights also made the list. Leading the way for Big Sandy is running back Ryan Miller, who was...
