An addition will be placed on the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line, it was announced at the fifth annual Festival of trees Friday night.

    The addition will include a large kitchen so light dinners can be offered to needy young people who need them.

    The kitchen was paid for with a $80,000 grant from the Maytag Corp., while money for a commercial sized freezer was raised during Friday night's festivities.

    The addition will enable the club to serve about 300 young people a day, it was announced. That's an increase from the 200 who use the facilities now.

    The club also handed out three awards during the festivities:

    • Havre Daily News Publisher Stacy Mantle was honored for the newspaper's coverage and advertising on behalf of the club.

    Rachel Dean, the club's endowment director, said the newspaper has backed the club since it opened 10 years ago, but has pickled up in its support in the last year.

    • Barb Fournier was honored for her many years of service. She came up with the idea for the Festival of Trees and chaired the first two festivals.

    • Boys & Girls and HELP Committee executive director Krista Solomon and club director Tim Brurud were surprised when they were called to the stage. The two were with the club when it opened and have served well for a decade, board President Susan Somers.

    Solomon was given a quilt that was designed by Fournier, and  Brurud, an avid NASCAR fan, was given an opportunity to drive a race car.
